Pedestrians deliberately walking out in front of cars

Recommended Posts

What`s the worst example of this sort of behaviour you`ve seen ?
A kid who 'dared' exactly as you describe (completely intentionally), at night...only he left it a little too late, and/or the ambient darkness dimmed the driver's awareness/peripheral vision/slowed his reaction time.

Besides acting as a witness for the benefit of the driver, I offerred the driver to paint a 'victory' stickman on their door

EDIT - kid was fine, only bruises. Car didn't have a mark either.

What did you do when it happened to you ?
[depending on circumstances, i.e. provided they are far enough to do all that and still come to a controlled stop should they actually feel suicidal-] insta-downshift and floor it, then brake strongly but without dropping anchors, to then pass by the 'yoofs' at a sedate 25-ish, with a cheshire cat grin. Small pleasures, little things in life...

What can you do if they just stand there ? ! ?
Move forward at walking pace, then nudge if needed, like your friend.

Wrong!

You can have all the due care and attention in the world, if someone runs out in front of you while your doing 30, you ain't going to stop in time.

The outcome will be accidental death and it would have been their fault.

I'll agree to disagree.

Run into them!

If they walk or run into the road, then they are at fault, as long as your not speeding then they have to shoulder the blame.

That's only true if you don't have time to stop, in which case the question of what you should do is irrelevant - you'd have already hit them before you started thinking about what to do.

If you make no effort to avoid them, you will almost certainly be charged with manslaughter. Even if you cannot make any effort to avoid them because they run out less than half a second in front of you, you still might face charges of causing death by dangerous driving - PC Rodney Mills can tell you about that.

Just a simple google says otherwise.

If the driver has no chance, no charge.

They're hoping for confrontation to make their day worthwhile, distinguishable from other days. They will have the chance to look like the hard men they really are in front of their mates.

Students are the worst. Because road sense comes under common sense (something most students are bereft of), they won't know how to cross a road until they've attended some lectures and taken an exam.

I disagree, I think they do it on purpose to annoy people which is why they just saunter across the road to try and prove they're not bothered.

I agree with you. Though I think far from being unbothered, a few of them might end up playing wheelchair basketball for the rest of their lives......

Has anyone out there had pedestrians deliberately walk out in front of their car ? Obviously I don`t mean suicides (or pedestrians crossing a side road you`re turning into*) I mean pedestrians playing "chicken", usually showing off to their mate(s).

These people must be mad, they obviously haven`t ever thought that the driver might be playing with his/her stereo and not even see them, or they might be a road rage psycho and actually deliberately drive into them ! They really could end up legless, and I don`t mean drunk.......

In just 2 days I`ve seen this deliberate walking out into the road twice. A couple of lads on those scooter things crossed Langsett Rd straight in front of a car which had to slow right down, but the worst incident was on Gibraltar St when 2 youths (they weren`t even looking, and in fact their hoodies would have stopped them seeing anything out of their peripheral vision) just walked straight out in front of two lanes of traffic coming at full speed round the bend, the leading car in the outside lane literally had to stop (just) !

A friend of mine had a group of kids lounging about in the street (it was a commuter route not a dead end) and not moving as she drove up to them, she kept slowing down but they still didn`t move and in fact she lightly touched one of them, he was so shocked he finally walked off.

* They`re actually entitled to do that, legally they have right of way.

I hit someone who did this very thing only a couple of weeks ago.

It was in Bradford, not Sheffield so its not exclusive to our city.

1. Kids crossing the road after school.

2. Slow down and let them cross.

2. Turn the ignition off and wait for them to move, I’m never in a rush to get anywhere.

Yes. By letting youngsters stick it to you and disrupt yours and others days you are really teaching them a valuable lesson.

Not if you have been witnessed to have had plenty of time to stop, but decide not to and run them down.
