Can certain internet viruses disable your anti virus software?

Why would you go to all that trouble when you just create a rescue USB pen drive and run it on the infected PC? Boot from the pen drive, have the anti-virus scan the drive. Job done.

No messing around swapping hard drives around, no chance of infecting your own pc, and it's probably quicker.

P.S. I'd rather have a virus on my drive than Norton.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but is this easy to do? It sounds like a great idea.

Norton is actually much better than it used to be... but it's chequered history remain and tarnish its reputation. Despite it being one of the better candidates in most independent AVS reports for 2012.. still think it's a bit bloated mind.

I used to use Eset ESS (Nod32) for many years, but it'd slipped up a couple of times last year, and it's not been as highly rated in many reports this year as previously.

After reading loads of reviews I decided to give Bitdefender a whirl this year, and touch wood it's been ok so far.. still it's a bit bloated too, but it's great for none advanced users like my old man.. who can pretty much forget about it.

To be fair, there really isn't much between all of them.. I just liked the ecosystem Bitdefender offered with coverage of mobiles included in the deal..

As a matter of fact all of them were using free software or non at all not one single computer was installed with any version of Norton or symantec and nowhere did i say the contaminated machines were running Norton so why the sarky attitude.

Your experience are complete direct opposite to my experience when it comes to fixing other people's problems.

People who install virus checker free or not tends to be more clued up because they have installed it and more likely to investigate options available of what they have just installed and those are the kind of people who by large don't need your help when problems do occur.

Norton / McAfee anti-virus on the other hand comes largely pre-installed on many new machines and so they tend to have larger pool of first time users.

I would say Norton is highest mentioned of what virus checker they were currently using when people come here asking for help on virus related issues.

Bitdefender and kaspersky seems to get more mentions / recommendation these days. Kaspersky tends to be the first to report on viruses in the wild.

I think the problem is that 'bad old days' pushed people away to alternatives that were less bloated, cheaper, and often free.

Norton might be better than it was, but its still a needless expense compared to free solutions from MS, Avira, Avast, AVG, Comodo and the rest.

MSE and occassional scans with MBAM Free should be more than enough and it won't cost you a penny.

Yep, just Google some combination of "usb" "pen drive" "rescue" "anti-virus" "free" "security", etc.

There are some free ones which you can install on your flash drive if you already have one (some include complete rescue kits for things other than viruses).

I think the one mentioned above is a USB stick you have to buy with the software already loaded on to it, that's an option but I prefer the free route.

Some antivirus software may have an option somewhere to create a USB/cd back up option (not sure on this, I honestly can't remember the last time I had a virus. So I just let MSE do its thing in the background, auto-updating on windows PCs).

the comment about the worlds best know anti virus system beggers belief

The reason it's the best known (and probably most installed) is because idiots who buy PCs from PC World (and just about everyone else who sells pre-built, pre-installed PCs) buy a PC with a trial version running. Most have more money than sense, so when the trial runs out after 3 months they pay for it rather than getting one of the many free AV software alternatives. Vendors get paid for installing the trial version (hence why it's on so many preinstalled PCs). It's effectively blackmail.
