TINAC
ok so we have had our bengal female for about 6 years now, and she's become very scared and timid. it all started two days ago when my daughter took her out of her bedroom and she just started to scream( she has a very high vocal meow almost like a dog) so that night she stopped out all night which isn't normal for her, i came home from work and she was inside the nieghbours shed, which has a hole at the top which she uses to get in and out. but she would not come back into the house, she was just meowing very loudly as if she wanted to come in, but was scared to do so.... so it's been 3 days now and she has not eaten and is scared to go out of the house. Does anyone have any idea's on this situation???

medusa
It sounds rather like she may be in pain to me. Is there any chance that she could have inadvertently have been injured? All sorts of things happen without major falls or accidents, including dislocating elbow, knee, toe and other leg bones with ungainly losses of balance whilst climbing or clinging onto a surface. The body rotating past a paw that has claws lodged into fabric that the cat is unable to get their claws out of (think climbing the side of the bed and then overbalancing but not being able to get the claws out of the bed in time) can break the wrist or arm bones too. If she goes outdoors she could have ingested all sorts of things or even have had a glancing blow from a car or have an abscess from scrapping with another cat. Any of these things could have happened before your daughter handled her and just being handled caused pain which freaked her out. I'd be trying really hard to get into that shed to coax her into a basket with some food for a full vet check to be honest. Worry about whether it's a behavioural problem or she's going mad once you've ruled out that she's in pain and can't tell you about it. EDIT- and before you say that she can't have a broken bone, injury or whatever because she's not limping, cats are the masters of disguise with this sort of thing and often the only way you can tell is when they are skittish, freaked out, scared or aggressive because they are struggling with the pain. I've seen a cat with very serious injuries walk with no limps many times- showing you have an injury makes you appear vulnerable to bigger and stronger animals. katkin
as owner of two barmy bengals I'd go with what Medusa says - they are renowned hunters and climbers and our daft male Alfie tends to spend most of his time as high up as possible - and thinks nothing of leaping down stairs, off fridge freezers or into shower cubicles, idiot that he is. He'll also try to jump out of upstairs windows if he finds one opened. He once injured himself badly doing it so if your girl is anything like him, it's worth getting her checked out.It doesn't help either that bengals have that pained YOWWWWWWWWL that sounds like a baby being tortured. It's hard to know sometimes whether they are in genuine pain, being irrational or just trying to communicate to us in their own batty way. Our female is a rescue and she makes the most awful row if our Norwegian Forest cat girl comes anywhere near her, or she sees a cat outside, even if they don't appear to pose any kind of a threat. TINAC
Thanks for your advice we are going to take her to the vets. She's still being very vocal and not wanting to come into the house. Kept her indoors last night and she just meowed all night long, but this morning she was out playing in the garden and fine, but a male appered and he seemed young and started following her. she played for a while but then gave him a warning because he came too close.I went out and he ran off, but i'm thinking do cats come in season like a dog? medusa
Blimey! Is she not neutered? Cats have a season about every 3 weeks for 3-5 days, but if an entire tom comes along and yowls the right tunes that reorganises the seasons and makes the queen ovulate pretty much on command. I would have assumed that letting a cat go outdoors she would be spayed. They flip, sound like they're in pain or distress, scratch everybody and everything in sight and go missing for days when they're in season. medusa
Ah- back to my original thoughts then It had just never entered my head that she could be entire, but if she was entire then that would explain all of her strange symptoms too.
