So called 'Milk minister', Jim Paice - Head of Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, has been coming under fire since he told Radio 4 that he doesn't know the price of a pint of milk.

Now I feel kind of bad for him, cause I didn't know the price of milk either, why? Cause I don't buy it. Neither does he, his wife does, according to him.

How are you supposed to know the price of something you don't buy?

Fine, he's head of a department that covers food and farming, but would he also be criticised for not knowing the price of a bag or marshmallows or a tractor wheel?

Give the guy a break.

Can you still buy milk by the pint in the UK? - I thought you had to buy it by the litre?

I could work out how much a pint costs - but why would I want to bother?

I think we still have milkmen; who come round still in milk floats, me mum is old school & she has hers delivered daily. The supermarket does seem to have cornered the majority of the market though, I ain't seen a milkman in yonks.

Why not do both?

50p per pint isn't too difficult to remember, even for a Tory minister.

lol, people are getting too hung up on the pint thing. I think the issue is that he didn't know how much milk was, whether it be by the pint or by the litre.

I'm sure he'd have been alright if he said it's however much per litre. I don't know, I'm guessing it's like 90p a litre if a pint is just under 50p.

Whether he knows the price of milk or not is (IMO) irrelevant.

I wonder whether he knows what he's going to do should a significant number of dairy farmers stop farming? Many of them are selling milk at a loss. Unless something is done about it, they are going to get a further 2p per litre cut in the payment for milk in August.

Some farmers are (apparently) losing 5p a litre on every litre they produce. (I'm not sure how they can bear that sort of loss.) if they lose 7p a litre, some have said they will stop dairy farming. Some of those who stop dairy farming will 'diversify' and find another use for their land.

The supply of milk will decrease and if the demand increases (or even stays steady) the price will go up. Perhaps significantly.
