Sweet shop at Nether Green

Possibly Wallers. Newspaper and sweet shop. I "marked up" newspapers early mornings in the early 60's.

As of the late '60's I am sure it was just a sweet shop. The name Wallers doesn't ring a bell.Looks like a trip to the Archives...

Wasn't Wallers the newsagent in Crosspool at the bottom of Lydgate Lane. Did a Sunday paper round there in the 60's. They dropped the bag off on Sandygate Road near the golf club. Everyone round there had at least two papers-The Sunday Times and one other. The bag weighed a ton and probably wouldn't be allowed these days.

A 1960s directory shows "J.V. Waller, newsagent" at 340 Lydgate Lane (corner of Manchester Road - it's now "Motor World")..:)

Probably the same owner as the Nether Green shop. He also owned a little shack behind Fulwood Church close to the War Memorial (Canterbury Avenue). Stocked cigarettes, sweets, and was a distribution outlet for The Star.

Hi Edave, I remember that little shop in the 50s which is now close,

use to get our ice creams from there.

In my years there was a shop next door the sold plants, my parants

bought flowers from there.

Talking of Fulwood Church i went their in the late 40s/50s for

morning service and wonderful memories. hihi. :hihi::hihi:

Ahh the newsagent on Lydgate Lane (now Motor Word). I remember going in there in the early 80s, buying chocolate shape tools and pannini stickers before GT News moved to its current location. Happy days!

The guy who ran the newsagent was a tennis fan and always had the second week of Wimbledon off.
