Advertising rates

Recommended Posts

Hi, I wondered if anyone had any idea about average rates for advertising in local media? I know this is a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' question, but just wanting a rough idea of rates for advertising in places such as local newspaper, free newspapers, free magazines, anywhere else that people can think of with the aim of targeting customers in Sheffield.

Thanks!

I dont think you will get an average price as it will vary widely between publications. I have spent £50 on a quarter page advert before and also £250 for the same sized advert but in another magazine. It all depends on the distribution/reputation of the publication. Generally, the bigger the distribution, the more you pay. I guess you can use these prices as an indication?

Newspapers like the Sheffield Star will cost you a fortune (depending on what page you advertise on), but if you contact smaller area-targeted magazines (e.g. Active8, Westside, etc), you may get better rates.

Thanks. I'm aware that prices will vary depending on requirements - was really just wondering if anyone had guidelines on going rates for say a free paper vs somewhere like the Sheffield Star.

What would people suggest is a necessary circulation in order to get results?

In all honesty it's not for promoting my own business, it's for a possible new venture.

I'm interested in knowing what people's thoughts are on reasonable advertising prices and what sort of circulation figures would be needed in order to be attractive to advertisers.

Problem with magazines and local press is theres no analytics involved. So advertisers get poor value for money and less ways to measure return on investment.

That's why internet advertising and optimization is much more effective. Thats what i do.

Put it this way an advertiser could spend 250 on a quarter page ad which has a 10000 circulation of non targeted customers or they could spend the same amount reaching 1000 targeted and highly responsive customers on the net.

I know which one I'd choose.

You could always add a "Quote - 1234" type message to a mag ad then you would know where it came from. Or you could use the old style analytics and ask when people call you!

The easiest way to get all the prices is to simply call them up and ask for a rate card. :)

Thanks. As an example, if you knew that a magazine was going to be read only by your target market and would be distributed to 5,000 people within just a few miles of your business, how much would you be willing to pay for an ad?

Ball park figure for say a quarter page, half page and full page?

Thanks, I know it's difficult to really put a figure on it without knowing more info but I'm just looking for a rough idea at the moment!!

Qtr Page; £150...Half Page; £250...Full Page; £400. But thats what I would be WILLING to pay and only if the magazine was credible. However, as TCJ1 has said - online advertising is much better value for money and is traceable. But if its definitely printed advertising you are after, this is my opinion what you will prob be quoted (on a 5000 distribution).
