My rented house needs re-wiring - do I have to move out?

Recommended Posts

I live in a private rented house yesterday because of the rain a leak started in my bedroom !

The rain got into the electrics and started a small fire in the ceiling obviously blowing the fuses meaning im left with no lighting.

The fire brigade advised that the electrics shouldnt be turned on until the leak had been repaired.

My landlady sent someone round today to look at what needs doing theyve said the whole house needs re-wiring and obviously the leak needs fixing and have stated that i have to leave the property whilst this is being done !!!

1st things 1st shouldnt she have seen to it that the leak was fixed asap it now well over 24 hours later ? by right the electricity shudnt be used surely i shouldnt be left with none or even some but faulty. !

If or when they decide to rewire is it up to my landlady to rehouse me during this period or do i have to find somewhere to stay theyre going to make a mess of my house and il have to redecorate etc etc shurely i have some right here ??? can anyone advise me on what to do :help:

My parents house has been re-wired twice in the last 20 years, both times it was done in a day, though the electricians did request that carpets and furniture be moved prior to their arrival.

Only thing I can see being an issue for you is fridge/freezer contents.

I've never heard of some-one needing to move out whilst a re-wire is done, it can be a bit messy as they'll probably have to chase out the walls to route new wiring and they will need to lift floorboards upstairs to get at the ground floor lights but it's just a case of working round things. The power shouldn't even need to be off for long even if they need to fix in a new circuit breaker board (fusebox)

For a re-wire you move furniture and roll back carpets as some floorboards have to come up, also make sure you loft space is clear too.

My Dad is an electrical and rewired my house last year. Took him 2 1/2 days (it is a small house and he is no spring chicken anymore!) with myself and by boyf doing any chasing out, he came and put in new consumer board the week before then stayed with us as he did the rewire. We had no carpets upstairs and the plasterer had not been so that part was easy. It was quite fiddly to do downstairs. He is an perfectionist so he did not want to completely ruin my walls or floorboards so we managed to feed a lot of the new wires downstairs as we pulled out existing ones which was time consuming. There will be mess however careful they are.

I would book a holiday or stay with friends for a few days. Yes you can stay in when they do it, but it means that they have to ensure you have electricity at the end of each work day which adds time and costs, it also means they have to put floor boards back down to make it safe. Hope you get sorted quickly.

They don't have to take a lot of boards up it is not that difficult, they can take one at each end of the room and feed the wires under the boards then just put them back with a couple of nails in if they need to come back up.
