£36k+ per year in rent for a market stall, RIP Sheffield market

Recommended Posts

The market is excellent. I went in with £10 bought some meat + veg and left the market with some change.

The chicken breast for £2.50 was massive and almost half the price of the value/cheap chicken breasts at major supermarkets.

Looking at the amount of people in there though, it did look quite empty. There were many empty stalls. Perhaps would make sense to drop the rental costs and get some income from these empty stalls? a bit of rental income has to be better than nothing at all?

It needs more customers not stalls. The fact is the council moved the market away from its central location (few minute walk from the bus station), they have also just cut funding to the FREEBEE bus service which would pick people up at the station or the old castle market area and eventually drop them right next to the new market.

As always the council dont think things through properly and constantly shoot themself in the foot, sadly the stall holders and old people who used to frequent castle market will suffer and the rest of us will pick up the tab with our council tax.

That is because it was the location that Sheffield markets have stood on for a thousand years until a set of complete nut cases thought it would be a good idea to move it.

it wasn't central it was on the edge of the crappiest part of town and the new market is served by more bus routes than the old market the majority of people i see who use the free bee are the elderly and disabled who get free travel anyway it is also close to the Moorfoot where virtually all the council are going to be working from so will gain from more workers shopping there which didnt happen at the old markets

If it was such a good location, then why was it in such decline and losing so much money?

Why can't people accept the old Castle Market was a dump and needed closing

Because some people live in the past and dream of bread, dripping, Trophy Bitter and rickets.

They still sell bread & dripping, not sure about the other two, you'd have to try Sainsbury's.

The Moor is still a dump, hopefully the market will do better when they've finished demolishing & rebuilding the rest of The Moor.

A bit like the era when folk could be expected to travel on buses and shop in markets then.
