Defunct
Or are they part of a bye gone era? 9 til 5 were always the working hours of office staff for many years. You worked 9 til 5 and got a paid one hour lunch break and a half day on Friday. Have times changed?

Rupert_Baehr
You could always be self-employed. It's an easy life (according to the individual who was complaining about immigrants coming over to the UK, working as self- employed people and sending money home.) If you're self employed, you can probably get away with working half-days. Any 12 hours will do.

GoGo_dancer
The principle is still the same for many office workers but most employers now offer more flexible arrangements to fit around family life. I've worked an 8 till 4 office job for the last 16 years and will probably continue to do so until the mortgage is paid off (in another 16 years) or we win the lottery! Judging by the amount of traffic going into the city centre at around 8:30 and the amount coming out just after 5 I'd say 9 to 5 jobs are alive and kicking. Mister M
Many more people work part time than they used to. Sometimes that's because people want to work part time, sometimes because there aren't enough full time opportunities.
highfly
Or are they part of a bye gone era? 9 til 5 were always the working hours of office staff for many years. You worked 9 til 5 and got a paid one hour lunch break and a half day on Friday. You forgot, "and paid for time off for dental appointments etc." What a crazy unjust system. Manual workers had a half-hour UNPAID lunch break, AND had to work the full hours on Friday too. When it came to the likes of dental appointments, did they get paid for them? Absolutely no way.
