SilverRain
Well this is an odd request perhaps. I am trying to find out, for the purposes of a bit of a private investigation I am conducting, if someone who claims to have been involved in an accident some years ago (could be anything from 7-12 years) really was in one - apparently it was serious enough to be in the papers, assuming local ones. Is there any archive or some such I can search online, or any other record? I know the person's name but no real other details apart from rough idea of the circumstances and that it was in South Yorkshire/Derbyshire. Help much appreciated
Moosey
Depends what it is. There's a record of all claims that have been made within a certain amount of time if you have reason to access it, so if a claim was made you could trace it. There are also various insurance records you could access. Need more details really on type of accident etc.
Elphi 24
hhmmmm as a private investigator shouldn't you be aware of and have access to the majority of publicly available records? I'd have thought that was a pre-requisite of the job?!
SilverRain
Moosey: it was a motor accident. Surely the insurance records aren't accessible to the public? Elphi: I am not a private investigator. I wish I could afford one and pay them to investigate

The Data Protection Act has a clause which allows all DPA concerns (confidentiality etc) to be completely overruled if you are looking for the information in connection with legal proceedings, to avoid crime etc. Google Section35 Data Protection Act. For example, say I know someone is committing insurance fraud, I could request such details, and if the insurers refused them, I could make an application to the Courts for disclosure. It very much depends on what you want and why really, but you can get most records if you know how to.
