barpen
A group of runners who went to Graves Park to raise miney for a cancer charity were rewarded with £70 fines by Sheffield's parking wardens. http://blogsite.co/sheffield/sheffield-charity-runners-hit-with-parking-tickets-sheffield-telegraph/ Scores of people who took part in Weston Park’s Run in the Park at Graves Park on Sunday returned to their cars to find £70 penalty notices. Emma Gibson’s husband Keel was among those who received a ticket. She said: “He raised over £100 for charity – now we have to pay a £70 for fine.” Trevor Taylor, from Tickhill, Doncaster, was moreover fined. He said: “I attended along with 2,000 other people to support one of the most deserving charities in Sheffield. Traffic management in the area was non-existent – leading to people parking anywhere they could find a space. “Almost every vehicle had been issued with a parking ticket when runners received back, to everyone’s disgust. “Sheffield Council should have received behind the event, not sought to penalise people who had come together to raise money. The sour feeling is that Sheffield Council embraced ‘easy pickings’ & used the event as a chance to raise money for itself.” Weston Park fundraiser Helen Gentle said: “The police & council were informed of the event & we had told all participants parking was limited, so we asked people to car share if possible. barpen
In places they knew they shouldn't. I'm sure you are right. I wonder where that leaves the Cliff Hanger event this weekend which is a far larger event than a charity fund raiser. The main car park in Graves Park will be closed and used by the event. barpen
yes your correct, but i would have thought that alot more than 12 cars would have attended due to the lack of available parking spaces No.. My point is that an authorised charity event was held in Graves Park and the council made no attempt to make provision for it. 2000 people is hardly a massive number but no provision was made for it. Indeed quite a bit of the parking was taken up by folks errecting a marquee for the Cliff Hanger.
Vincero dOro
I wonder how many of the runners will have been put off partcipating in the next run, particularly now the council will expect them to pay a couple of quid extra to use the parking meters. Squiggs
Amazing how people can do a run but can't walk a few hundred yards from a safe parking space to the event
Forumosaurus
Although I don't agree with the parking charges at Graves Park, actually I think it's pretty disgusting, if they're there you'd have to be an idiot to think they're not going to ticket you just because you're in a charity run. Should have parked properly. Lots of people do stuff for good, I go give blood at Cathedral court, free parking at one of the west street car parks would be nice but I know giving blood is not going to be a defence against getting a ticket. Yes, provisions should have been made, but they weren't. So these runners can't complain if they parked against the rules and got ticketed. As I say, these graves park parking charges are annoying, but so is an undeserved sense of entitlement.
