Why don't Sheffield council offer small grants to festivals?

Recommended Posts

sheffield council and the south area assembly dont give a penny towards

loweges festival we have to rely on income from stalls and the tennants

association and any sponsors like the goverment comunity first and

stage coach and others all workers ect are unwaged and volunters ect we

attracted over ten thousand visiters in 2011 with free entry and most

attractions are subsidised offering a great day out at a low cost, the local nisa

paid for drakes of hazard from scotland, plus we have music, dance, dog show

ect event costs many thousands yet they wont help us in anyway why not

even offer us £500 but nothing not a penny, but they do take money off us for

licsenses ect anyway we will have a top day sun aug 12th please turn up and

show your support and it will make it all worth the effort to ensure people

have a day out at a low cost end of rant thank you

ermmm ? why should the council give other peoples hard earned money to you ??

because the council put in large amounts of money into the festivals ect

that they run then charge huge rents for stalls and entrance fees,we are

doing our best to help all the people in these hard times, and have worked hard all my life and dont think a donation as we all work free would do any

harm in these hard times thank you bassett one

In what way, and when did you apply for funding from these bodies?

begged the council , asked the parks dept for help, asked and been turned

down by area assembly, what upsets me most is we have over tenthousand

visitors, its a top show ,they put in money to the ones they run and charge for

also put inn thousands they run and dont charge to enter yet despite our

success not a penny or any help for us:help:

Did you apply? Sheffield City Council runs a small grant scheme that in the past has certainly supported community events. Each community assembly also runs grant schemes.

You could also try South Yorkshire Community Foundation.

South Yorkshire Funding Advice Bureau will have much more information on grants and funding, and VAS provides affordable training on all sorts of useful things like fundraising.

Start applying for next year as soon as this year's event is over, and good luck.

Money invested in city centre free festivals (such as Tramlines) attracts a large return for the local economy, there are many businesses that benefit from this investment (businesses that pay large amounts of rates and tax). The funding or "grants" pull in people from outside the local area, also being central it is accessible to people from all over the city.

I'd imagine that Lowedges Festival (although being a fantastic community event) would be unable to offer such "returns on investment" or be accessible enough to appeal to the whole of the city.

However, in most cases such as this, if you don't ask you don't get. If you were to lobby your local Councillor/MP and put a good case for funding together, then you might be in with a shout for something. You could also try funding bodies such as The National Lottery or The Arts council, if you could come up with some great proposals that appeal to their criteria. Or even try involving some commercial sponsorship, local firms, national brands.
