wendy1977
Hi iv bought myself a male cockatiel today and he's lovely, does anybody know how there brought up,he's 3 months old and I bought him from a pet shop the only concern I have is that he's feet are turned in and he isn't sure how to fly as he's bumped into everything even though the windows and mirror are covered up,he's flown into the tv,computer monitor and the living room door, are they kept in that cramped conditions that they can't even spread there wings and also he's not had no room for his feet grow properly,I feel so sad if that's how it is and I'm glad iv offered him a loving home where he's got a spacious cage to help him develop,I'm scared to now let him in case he hurts his self.. carreks mum
Hi I had a cockatiel many years ago but he was bought from a breeder with a good sized aviary. I think it maybe a good idea to take him to the vet for a quick check up, especially for his feet. If there is a problem with his feet there are certain conditions that can be rectified by using splints etc. I had many years of company from Dennis. He loved to talk and whistle. He sang the most amazing songs. Unfortunately he also learnt to say afew naughty words!
wendy1977
To be honest he seems ok,I only bought him Wednesday and he's already finger tame and he loves to sit on the computer moniter and watch my kids playing games,I'll keep an eye on his foot but it dosnt seem to bother him x
carreks mum
That's good to hear. He was probably a bit traumatised by the change. Birds don't travel etc very well and they get shocked so easily. Glad he's perked up and hope you have many happy years with him they are wonderful company.
terminator
Its common for birds to act in the way you describe when thay have been caged up but will adjust. Its a bit late to do anything about the foot.It may have been like that from birth though may also be breeders fault. There a bit like budgies there feet get coated in loads of poop due to them just being in a nest box with no materiels and it hardens like a cast. They finish up with like hard boots shall we say if thats not removed it could lead to there feet being deformed. wendy1977
I absolutely love him to bits, have you any tips on teaching him to talk xx
carreks mum
Teaching them to talk isn't always easy. We found that the best way wasn't to stand in front of him and repeat a word. Instead talk away from him and that way they pick up frequently heard words and sayings. Dennis loved having the top of his head scratched as we scratched him - gently - we'd say 'scratcy head, scratchy head'. he associated this and would put his head down and say 'scratchy head' asking for it to be done. He also picked up the telephone and we'd spend hours running to pick up when it was just Dennis.
