The Closed Shop (Walkley) - under new ownership

Recommended Posts

Was always going to be hard opposite a thriving pub.

Not always true - get two or three good pubs close together and you tend to attract people from further afield.

IMHO the manager in the Closed Shop seemed to lose interest a while ago - he used to keep a cracking pint at one time - last time I was in (when the Hallamshire was closed for refurb) I had to take 3 different pints back - don't think the lines had been cleaned for yonks.

One of my friends used to work there, and it has indeed closed. It has been going downhill for a while though and was badly in need of a refurb to compete with the Hallamshire House

It did seem to close for a period of time about a month or two ago.

But a few weeks ago, it was repainted outside, so is it really a permanent closure?

The pub company is talking to potential new tenants to operate the pub.

Any ideas which pub company it is Andy?

Thanks for updates, had many a happy evening in there, so hopefully it finds a suitable new owner.

That's a shame, was my local for many years, and still visited it regularly until it started to get more run-down last year. Cracking range of ciders mind.

I reckon it can still be viable even with the Thornbridge pub opposite. That brings lots of punters up to the area, but sometimes its just too packed to be pleasant, and its not every night you want to drink Jaipuir (or can afford it).

A Blake Hotel style makeover with similar beer types would be perfect.

George & Dragon and Rockingham Arms manage it.

I would have thought having a good popular pub on the opposite side of the road is a positive thing for business. As long as what you offer is also good and maybe slightly different?

So being taken over by the Rutland Arms - should be interesting times on Commonside.

Should be a Kelham/Abbeydale coalition against the advancing Thornbridge.
