Is it normal to dodge missiles as a cyclist?

The behaviour described in the original post is pretty typical for Sheffield, and has been ever since I've been here. I got spat at, cans chucked at me, some knob who was a passenger in a car tried to push me off once as they went past, and I even had some idiot taking pot shots at me with an air rifle from those flats at the top of Netherthorpe Road once.

 

Got any evidence to back that up? People get just as much abuse walking around supposedly idylic areas like Malvern.

 

Must admit as someone who has done a good deal of walking about in Malvern, that I've never been abused at all there but I certainly have been in Sheffield.

A few drivers on this thread are not coming across very well. I drive and also cycle.

Started cycling to work a couple of weeks ago and, touchwood, no problems so far.

I don't understand people's problems with cyclists on the road. Are they just wishing there were bigger traffic jams at rush hour?!

There is a growing hatred across the country building towards cyclists, a lot of this you bring upon yourselves especially in the peak areas, you do not ride in single file or stick in the cycle lanes, the amount of riders who run red lights to beat the trams is just a joke in itself. You do not pay any insurance against accident damage against other vehicles. We might be living in the Eco friendly age were the car is non PC, but its still king in the sense that its most efficient form of independent travel we have but we pay very much for this privilege. Until you contribute to the use of your vehicle, then i cant see the sympathy flag being waved much.

The most efficient form of travel we have is the bicycle, fact.!

I'le put my cards on the table before it gets hotted up Im a truck driving 4+4 owner and a cyclists worst nightmare so they wont get any sympathy from me my advise to cyclists is get a car or walk its a lot safer.

 

Clearly compensating for something. That's obvious from the username

The nuts don't seem to understand that if they succeed in bullying cyclists off the road, the ex-cyclists won't just sit at home twiddling their thumbs but will (probably) drive to work, increasing congestion and parking problems in town.

Having driven extensively in towns and cities, I don't generally find cyclists a problem. The ratio of ignorant ones to sensible ones is probably the same as that of motorists. Recently however I have had to drive in to the city via Penistone Road regularly, and I would like to know why virtually every cyclist totally ignores the dedicated cycle lanes. Are they badly made? If I returned to cycling I would prefer to be out of the motorists way as much as possible.

These excuses for cycle lanes are there to give the impression that the council give a fig, the actuality is that they don't.
