Industrial railways of Sheffield - any info or pictures

Recommended Posts

All of the big local steelmakers and engineering companies had their own internal railways but I can't find much info out about them. Be good to hear a few stories and also some pictures or even video clips of the old railways. Be interested also for any info on the BR locos which did the shunting outside the works.

Cheers.

I have been in the Railway Signalling industry for forty years and remember signalling a steel works railway at Aldwarke in Rotherham when I worked for Westinghouse Signals.

In those days we drilled the rails for Track Circuit connections with a non powered piece of apparatus that hooked onto the rail. There was one section of track embedded in asphalt as it crossed over a road used by the works lorries. We could not get the track circuits to energise, then some guy from the steel works told us the rails were laid on steel sleepers (which meant a dead short circuit across the rails) This was around the time of the steel workers strike in the early Eighties I think). Sorry, never took any pics
