Sheffield Utd takeover - offer for shares a scam?

Recommended Posts

Just come off the phone with a cold call from someone claiming to be putting together an offshore takeover of Sheffield Utd. Claiming to have 40% shares from institutional shareholders and looking to acquire further 10% (total 51%) from small shareholders.

Caller wants decision in principle in 24 hours.

Is this a scam? Anyone else had the same call?

Yes, I've had 2 calls from Sweden in the last week offering to purchase shareholdings in other small companies where a takeover was supposedly brewing. It's possible a bid could appear, but in both cases I don't seriously think that was the reason behind the call. It sounded very fishy.

Did the caller give a name of the firm they represented? I got the name Baker & Bains.

Does anything on this website ring any bells? http://www.clickstocktransfer.com/small-shareholder-programs/ and http://www.clickstocktransfer.com/oddlot-programs/

You may have been contacted by a similar operation. At present I haven't traced any more, but I intend to do so.

Look on Blades Mad, if anywhere they'd know. I thought McCabe owned 100%?

Not so. The shares aren't traded on any stock exchange, but buyers and sellers can be matched. What can suck people in to this particular approach is that shareholder information is publicly available, so the operators of this

scheme can speak with knowledge of the number of shares held and the full name and address of the shareholder.

It's almost certainly a scam, see; http://www.sufc.co.uk/page/PLC/0,,10418~2222349,00.html#continue

However, it's the offer to buy rather than sell that is intriguing. It sounds like they may ostensibly be trying to get hold of bank details to send funds to - but almost certainly won't, and probably will find a way to get money out!
