Doggy Hayfever!

Recommended Posts

I think Whiskey has hayfever, the poor sod!

He's scratching his face more and more often.. To the extreme that he's rubbed his nose so much on the floor he's made his nose bleed on both sides.

He just keeps scratching around his mouth, nose and eyes. He also chews his paws a fair bit.

Sounds like hayfever to me??

What is the most effective treatment for him?

second piriton, my dog is allergic to ragwort and meadow grass, bit of a pain when he spends most weekends at the stables.

1 x piriton for him,1 for me (i'm allergic to him and the horses)

If you want to go a cheaper route then any hayfever tablet from Wilkos or superdrug will work.

That's what i thought, but whats the amount x weight ratio?

Whiskey is a collie mix, probably about 20kg now (was 15kg but was a skinny boy - now he's much plump'er!)

I haven't actually got any piriton.. Got cetirizine hydrochloride which i take atm.

I might have a look at the ingredients and compare..

Is it generally a quite safe idea then, for dogs?

Hate to find her reacts to it or something.

I have always used 1 tablet of antihistamine/allergy for all my dogs tbh. It's usually a short term fix so not likely to cause any issues, long term grass allergies to pads may be better with vet prescription.

My boxer has 1 human piriton tablet, exactly the same as i take,( i think they're a bit stronger than supermarket types)

(the horse has about 5 at a time, so not any real weight ratio thing going on

1 for 32kgs,5 for 500kgs - all advised by the vet originally)

Its 0.4 mg per kilo but 1/4 tablet for every kg would be fine.Cetrizine is 1mg per kg

You can also use any of these but not in cobination with others.

Benadryl (Diphenhydramine)

Chlortrimeton (Chlorpheniramine)

Tavist (Clemastine)

Atarax/Vistaryl (Hydroxyzine)

Temaril (Trimeprazine)

Periactin (Cyproheptadine)

Loratadine

Promethazine

Terfenidine

Hydroxyzine

Oh and chlorphenamine is piriton but at less price.

You can order piriton in tubs of 500 for about the same price as a couple of packs of 30 blister packed ones from your local pharmacy
