Things that people get wrong that annoy you

Recommended Posts

The use of the word 'of' instead of the correct 'have', as in 'I should have known'.

its not "of" its "'ve" as in "should've"

Why is a company off-shoring menial roles to cut costs "loopy"? I've never had a problem with overseas call centres.

It would be fine if they ensured they didn't employ people with such strong accents. I sometimes have to hang up and try to get through to someone else.

I rarely get annoyed, but:

I am saddened by the hijacking of certain parts of the wonderful vocabulary that we have.

Racism, literally, is a fact of life and of nature and there is nothing wrong with expressing views involving it.

However, common usage, the vernacular if you will, has meant that laziness has allowed the use of 'racism'/'racist' to replace 'racial discrimination' or 'racial abuse' etc.?

On a similar tangent: the word 'discriminate' [verb].

To discriminate is lawful.

If you select a fine wine as opposed to bargain-bin rubbish, you discriminate. You have a discriminating palate.

If you choose a spouse suited to you, you discriminate.

If you as employer pick the best person for a position as your employee, you discriminate.

BUT unlawful discrimination is- er- unlawful. It's just that there are lawful types of discrimination: see above.

"Robin Reliant" .................. IT ISN'T!!!

It's "Reliant Robin"

Made by Reliant, model Robin......

You don't say "Mondeo Ford" or "Yaris Toyota"

It's a Reliant Robin for goodness sake!

The trotter's Van isn't a "Robin" either - it's a Super Regal IIRC.

I do say Model T Ford, though (and a very reliable car it has been).
