Hurricane over Sheffield.

Recommended Posts

I was near crystal peaks when it flew over and I just stood there and watched and thought of the pilots who flew them in the war and thought how much we owe to them.

Very true. A great post on a subject that seems so neglected.

Sorry I wished I heard it - always rush out and stare into the sky at the slightest buzzing in S2 and give em a wave . But nothing heard today in the skies. Although my Rachmaninov practising quite possibly drowned it out around 5pm.

There was a programme on Radio 4 this week about the injuries caused to Hurricane pilots because of the design of the plane. It was designed with a view to doing as much damage to the enemy as possible but that meant the pilots were vulnerable. There was actually a fuel tank behind the dashboard which meant if that was hit by a bullet, flames came into the cockpit. So many Hurricane pilots were burnt that these burns were nicknamed the Hurricane Rash. Plastic surgery advances were developed as a result of treating Hurricane pilots.
