bluecanary   13 #253 Posted June 7, 2016 Just started reading it last week and suggested it for the book club I attend.  I'm sure that it will go down well. Trying to relate the fictional road names to real ones adds an extra element to the experiences( "Liberty Street "= Freedom Road, maybe?). Fishface   10 #254 Posted June 8, 2016 If you like crime fiction you can't beat Ben Cheetham books which include areas in and around Sheffield.
 Share this content via...
stevekay1   10 #255 Posted June 8, 2016 Apologies if this one has already been mentioned, but I couldn't see anything after a quick scan. Have just finished a book called The House Fell on Her Head by Kate Mitchell. It switches between Walkley in the Blitz and the present day, focussing on the identity of a body discovered in a garden below an old Anderson Shelter. I would highly recommend it and I think the 5-Star reviews on Amazon are well-deserved:  https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01BF7PG3M/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1  Thanks. It's on my list - have read the first few chapters. It's getting lots of reviews.
 Share this content via...
stevekay1 Â Â 10 #256 Posted June 29, 2016 Added a few more reviews since I last posted on here: 7 in fact. I never knew there were so many Sheffield novels. The latest added is The Gamekeeper by Barry Hines, which I am claiming for Sheffield. Also the classic Granny was a Buffer Girl by Berlie Doherty. Next up will be Lauren Woodcock's tale of an autistic boy: Those Who Will Not See. It has started well, and Lauren is lovely, so I'm expecting it to be a good review. Do nice people write better books? http://stevek1889.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/sheffield-novels.html
 Share this content via...
XXTickerXX   10 #257 Posted June 30, 2016 Strange seeing this thread today. I was talking with my dad earlier and he told me about a book he thought was superb set in sheffield and about the 1st world war but he could never find it again. I found it on amazon and the reviews on there and goodreads are amazing. No idea if it has been mentioned before but it is....  Covenant with Death by John Harris. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0099106906/ref=s9_simh_gw_g14_i1_r?ie=UTF8&fpl=fresh&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=desktop-7&pf_rd_r=KGH8RXYX2FXYBTJEDD5A&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=6a6cc5dd-a0e9-4c0d-9260-d64d035f3a65&pf_rd_i=desktop  No idea how much is set in Sheffield or if they are from Sheffield but thought I would mention it. Just bought it to read myself.
 Share this content via...

stevekay1 Â Â 10 #261 Posted September 10, 2016 Thanks to Olive for the kind comments and to XXTickerXX for the Covenant With Death recommendation: just reviewed it on http://stevek1889.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/sheffield-novels.html It's a really good book. None of the pretentiousness of some First World war novels: pure story.
 Share this content via...
stevekay1 Â Â 10 #262 Posted February 20, 2017 Couple of new reviews of Sheffield novels posted at: http://stevek1889.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/sheffield-novels.html 1) The Girl with the Emerald Brooch,by Jackie Creek, a 1950s memoir written in novel form and: 2) The Bantams of Sheffield, by Guy Balguy. This was written in 1891 and is the second oldest novel set in Sheffield, to my knowledge. It is romantic Victorian novel with a lot of interesting insights into Victorian life in Sheffield. It is also the oldest novel containing dialect - an interesting read. I've re-published it, so it is now available to readers again. boston   10 #263 Posted February 20, 2017 Sky Edge 1917  Mark J Foster  Published on Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=mark+j+foster  This is a story based around the fictional events, which would later escalate into the Sheffield Gang Wars, and the subsequent control of the lucrative Sky Edge gambling rings in the city, during World War One.  The story involves the friendship developed between a young Samuel Garvin and William Francis, at having to endure the horror of the Western Front trenches, and of their subsequent return to Sheffield.  The later struggle between Garvin and George Mooney is well documented within the history of the city, as this story highlights the effect of the Great War within the city, and of its consequences for the control of Sky Edge.
