Approaching an employer for an unadvertised position - some advice please.

Recommended Posts

I am considering writing to a company providing a range of entertainment services regarding a position I wish to take up. The twist is the company is not, so far as I am aware, currently recruiting for this or any other position.

Without wanting to go into too much detail there is a noticeable gap in their marketing and merchandising as compared to their competitors; I have some ideas as well as the relevant skills to attempt to change this, but I have never approached an employer in this way before.

Does anyone have any advice on how to proceed? I am wary of coming across as arrogant, and while I have firm ideas on how they can improve I do not want to give these away ideas free of charge. I am particularly keen to read an employer's thoughts - how would you respond to an outsider asking you to hire them after highlighting a weakness in your business?

Don't write; phone them up.

If you want to get through to a decision maker; phone before 9:00 Tuesday to Thursday.

Hope it works out.

Or call before and after normal office hours. You may have more chance of getting through to a manager and potential gatekeepers who will call block have gone home.

Ah, now there's an idea! I hadn't thought of calling before or after the "gatekeepers" hours. I must try that myself. Good tip! ;)
