Why can't we have a proper airport in Sheffield?

Recommended Posts

Firstly we had one and it failed on its behind. Do we really want to go through all that again.

Secondly, we are surrounded by hills with peak district on two sides of the city. It makes it a little difficult to build a huge airport terminal, parking, ramps, stands, taxiways and runways. You need masses of open, empty flat land.

Thirdly, are there queues of people waiting to fly in and out of the city? In the world of business people are travelling on the trains less and less let alone international and internal flights. As for leisure travel, except for the ryanair and costa del brit mobs jetting off once a year where are all the holidaymakers coming from. Nearly all package deals fly from manchester or east midlands. As for long haul the only real airport to fly from is Heathrow. Quantas, Cathay Pacific, BA and other Flag Carriers etc dont do northern airports.

It simply wouldn't work. Even established airports like East Mid / Leeds Bradford etc are struggling.

Yeah, but we ARE MASSIVE!! Not bothered about other failed airports. Lets build it near a tram stop. Say Halfway? Loads of spare land and the local riff raff might get jobs.

Only if you insist on coming out with statements like that.

What would you call it then.

It was built, nobody used it and it was a financial black hole that had to eventually be bailed out by taxpayers. Its hardly a great success.

Maybe people realised that building it alongside the parkway in a built up area with a tiny runway only allowing hopper aircraft was slightly pointless

Stating that all international flights included a compulsory switchover in Amsterdam was hardly a great selling point.

That airport was rubbish. It wasn't even a real airport.

But there isn't loads of spare land. Nowhere near enough to build an airport. Do you realise the amount of space you need and more to the point flat land. You dont have a runway on a slope!

Anything beyond halfway starts to cross border into Derbyshire. Firstly most of that land is countryside and you would get the environmentalists kicking off and secondly the further away from the city you go the less of a "Sheffield" airport it would become... just like say Robin Hood Airport already.

What on earth would you call it.

Sheffield/Chesterfield? Sheffield/Derbyshire? Sheffield Eckington International?

Or what about East Midlands Airport........hmmmm

You are clearly taking the pee.

It had planes taking off and landing from it. Therefore a real airport

Are real airports only counted if Thomas Cook flies from there??? How about Ryanair and Sleezyjet?? Would that make it a real airport. :loopy:
