Foreign patients debt to city hospital

Recommended Posts

It is not compulsory to take out insurance against hospital bills - not for us when we go to the USA, and not for foreigners when they come here.

It's strongly advisable, because a medical bill can bankrupt you; but it cannot be enforced, and if someone runs up a medical bill for money they just don't have, then the hospital cannot recover it.

It's generally not a popular idea to refuse to treat people who can't afford it - even when they are foreigners.

Strange, but if you're an expat pensioner like a friend of ours who paid all his working life into the system but lived abroad and came back to the UK for heart surgery you get a bill for the surgery.

Don't know where you live but most people I know are sick of foreigners using our health service for free.

Very true; but if you don't have money, the bill won't be paid. (Whether it's possible to be an expat and have no money is another question.)

That's interesting, I've many friends and British members of my own family who live abroad and can receive treatment on the NHS.
