Got an old pc case and put a mobo in, the case has front usb and audio ports. (usb -no problemo) but its the audio thats confusing me, and causing me to rip out my hair at this early hour!!

Front Panel Audio Connector:

1 Port E [Port 1] Left Channel

2 Ground

3 Port E [Port 1] Right Channel

4 Presence# (dongle present)

5 Port F [Port 2] Right Channel

6 Port E [Port 1] Sense return

(jack detection)

7 Port E [Port 1] and Port F [Port 2] Sense send (jack detection)

8 Key

9 Port F [Port 2] Left Channel

10 Port F [Port 2] Sense return (jack detection)

What Connections I have:

MIC IN (ORANGE)

MIC IN (GREEN)

GND (BLACK)

GND (BLACK)

L. IN (BLUE)

L. OUT (RED)

R. IN (PURPLE)

R. OUT (YELLOW)

Now which is which?????

Searched Google, and have done so for the last 2 hours, and I cant find anything of much help, so PLEASE HELP ME!! :help: :help: before the men in white coats come to take me away (ha-ha, come to take me away, hee-hee) see its started already!! :P

Your case is probably AC97, and the mobo HDaudio.. The two are incompatible usually unless u get lucky..

GROUND is obvious.. Goes to either GND

The L and R can just be trial and error

My guess is use E, but trying it CAREFULLY with the machine on and some sound playing is best, as long as you leave GROUND connected.. My guess is it wont work due to no jack detection capability..

Check the motherboard manual/bios tho.. You can sometimes switch it between HDAudio or AC97

Did you check the BIOS as requested?

Why? I need to know which wire goes where on the mobo from the case!

thats why I said manual and bios, because if you can switch it to AC97 in the bios, we can then work out which wire goes where and it will work...

Exactly.

If the BIOS has the AC97 option then we can use any old AC97 pinout to work out where they would go (AC97 often is a block connector as a standard pinout no all AC97 compatible oards).

But if it DOESN'T have AC97 then I'm not really sure. You might be able to short the jack detection lines to ground to trigger the PC to see something is there, I never tried that to see if it would work or not.

The thing with newer boards is they have jack tasking, which basically means there is no standard input pins or output pins, you can choose in software which is why. In that case you would be able to hook them up whichever way you want, then would have to guess which is which in the drivers to configure it - assuming you can turn off or force the jack detection.

Right, okay been in bios, and there is nothing in there that mentions AC97.

The only thing it does say is "On-Board Audio- ENABLED" and "Legacy FP Audio- ENABLED.

The case has all seperate pins like as mentioned in Post #1, and nothing on the mobo to indicate where they go (unlike System Panel)

This info came from searching for the MoBo manual and it came up with this on at least 4 different sites, yet I still dont know where the case pins attach to on the MoBo itself.

Front Panel Audio Connector:

FROM ONLINE-MANUAL:-

1 Port E [Port 1] Left Channel

2 Ground

3 Port E [Port 1] Right Channel

4 Presence# (dongle present)

5 Port F [Port 2] Right Channel

6 Port E [Port 1] Sense return

(jack detection)

7 Port E [Port 1] and Port F [Port 2] Sense send (jack detection)

8 Key

9 Port F [Port 2] Left Channel

10 Port F [Port 2] Sense return (jack detection)

What Connections I have from case:

MIC IN (ORANGE)

MIC IN (GREEN)

GND (BLACK)

GND (BLACK)

L. IN (BLUE)

L. OUT (RED)

R. IN (PURPLE)

R. OUT (YELLOW)

Still got no ideas.

Anyone have any further advice? :D

Legacy FP Audio sounds promising.

Try using the AC97 pinouts from here.
