Data recovery from SATA 3.5" HDD

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any experience of getting data from a Hitachi 1TB 3.5" SATA HDD?

This belongs to a friend of mine who dropped it and it stopped working

There is a mechanical fault meaning the arm is not reading (just swings back and forth). The disk was stuck but I released this and it's turning freely now

Budget for data recovery is £100

Recovery will cost a lot more than £100. just depends how much data you want to recover. cheaper option is to get same HDD (exact model) and swap platters. In this case you still can back up all your data, but you will end up with 2 broken HDD's. But for that you will need special tool to remove platters, because misalignment of the platters will destroy any chance of recovering data (hardest bit of all process). But i know Hitachi introdeced 1TB drives with just a single platter in 2011 (that makes a lot easier). not much help i guess, but something to consider :)
