Looking for a business mentor

Recommended Posts

Your local chamber of commerce may offer free advice for pre-start start up businesses. I'm sure others will be along soon with suggestions. There have been a lot of changes in the last few years so I'm not sure what organisations are still around. I do hear people mention SENTA a lot but I've no experience myself.

Re. SENTA, it really depends what the business is.

In both my experience and (therefore moderately-informed) opinion, SENTA may prove useful if you're about to start a local, small-scale business (think market stall, web design, that kind of small scale), but not so much (if at all) if the business is more specialised/pitching at SME level.

The Chamber is a better 'bet' in this respect, but then again so could Business Link's "replacement" organisation, or -depending on the OP's location- a similar support structure (e.g. Rotherham's RiDO, which is very good if you'll be into tech/making widgets).

Sheffield Chamber own SENTA so the Chamber itself doesn't do start up advice. As L00b says, it's really only for your small-medium start ups and not the more ambitious/larger startups. ie sole traders, partnerships.

have you tried these guys?

ww.sheffieldbusinesshelp.co.uk

a friend of mine started her small business with their help and I know she thought they were great at helping her get all of her thoughts together into an actual workable business idea, and then helped her start it up and get making money.

She's doing really well, even though we didn't think she'd be able to make it! We're all very proud of her :)

Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber do start up advice if you aren't in Sheffield.

I know a couple of people but they are professional business mentors, so not FOC. We used a guy called Richard Gourlay a while back. He really helped us identify our goals and also put some processes in place. If you wanted something a bit more structured, the other person I know is called Tano Rebora from a company called Icon.

If you are wanting free advice, then there is still stuff on how to do a business plan and so on on the Business Link website.

Hope that helps

Find an entrepreneur in a related field and approach directly with a specific request.

You don't need a management consultant, you need someone who has been successful in your field and someone who shares your aspirations and values.

Call 0800 0435522 which is the gateway for business help in Sheffield.

Funded by SCC you can get pre and post start business advice, specialist advisors for high growth or existing £1 million+ T/O businesses, specialist help with sales and marketing and/or IT and help with tendering for business with the public sector. There is also a mentor bank of about 350 successful entreprenuers who offer their time for free.

Some of it is delivered by SENTA and other agencies, but it's a city wide SCC funded service.
