Geriatric and Dementia care is the Cinderella of the nursing profession. No one wants to train for it, especially doctors. I think there should be a special diploma in this kind of care.

 

There is plenty of dementia courses if you have an NVQ you can bolt on dementia units at level 2 or 3. There is also postgraduate qualifications

Not all carers are on minimum wage- if you have specialist skills or are more experienced and therefore do a more responsible role then those both affect the wage. Granted it's not high compared to a lot of other jobs, but it's more than just enough to scrape by on too.

 

There are also a lot of people who CHOOSE to be support or care workers, including those who do have previously had other careers. In most care scenarios there are still way more people applying for jobs than there are jobs available, so if the jobs are so dreadful and so badly paid, why would there be (for instance, the most recent one I know of) 130 applicants for 2 positions?

 

Because there are not enough jobs for people? I know not everyone is on NMW but a lot are, and the motive is profit. Forest Healthcare (the company in this instance) is a private company geared up to make profit. Pay more to get better staff and profit will drop. Tony says there's no such thing as bad profit, I wonder what the thinks of this?

My sister (19) works in a care home for patients suffering from dementia in S12. I would say its outrageous some of the things she has said that happens

She too works alone at times, and has to change both male and females 'nappies' late at night. And often subject to physical violence herself (because the patients dont know what they are doing)

There are alot of polish in the place she works and shes said quite often the way they speak to the patients is really unprofessional/you wouldnt wish it on your own relatives

Probably no different today than 10, 20, 30 years ago. The only difference is our access to the crap that goes down. Yester year was hush hush sweep it under the carpet attitude, not so easy now.

 

In all honesty I'm really not surprised by any of it, inc children and animals. Anyone/thing who is vulnerable plays healthcare roulette.

Plus we live in a less caring world these days. I don't think its just carers at the bottom. Nurses are also less capable than they were. I'm fortunate to have never been in hospital. I listen to my cousin, who's a senior nurse with the NHS.[/QUO

 

 

Are you going to enlighten us what your senior nurse cousin in the nhs says .just in case we ever have to have experiance with them,in the future.

 

Some of the overseas nurses don't have the correct training and some have difficulty understanding basic instructions. She says she given up trying to explain and just does things herself, its easier.

Various opinions from patients, most seem satisfied.

I agree that the standard of care is not what it used to be in Hospitals,basically due to staff shortages and impossible demands,but i don't think that anything as scandalous as the abuse that happened in that home could happen in an NHS Hospital.

I know money should not come into this,but those private homes are charging extortionate fees.

 

And what about this latest news that happened so close to home.

Quite. It's amazing how many on here know so many who know of others abusing their positions but do no more than run to a forum.

 

If you want it to stop and you're in a professional position to do it, then do it and report the abuse.

First you get two female 'carers' dumping the old girl around as if she's a piece of meat; next you get a male 'carer', taunting, twisting her arm, then hitting her.

 

I wonder how prevelant this kind of 'care' is?
