But the country doesn't run on fags/booze. No one said the oil company's were hard done by the point is the government are sucking up 64%> out of our pockets for doing naff all.

Naff all? The govments fighting war's to keep the oil prices down :s plenty of money to make bombs, but no money to create jobs or keep petrol prices down. War's put petrol price's up. Found an intresting video on YouTube

is this what the govment has planed for us? the high petrol prices, food shortage, war on terror is just to keep us suppressed And after the Olympic's it's just gona get worser. This is not why my grandad fought for this country only for the idiots at number 10 to bend over and take it up the back side by secret society's our govment is not in control :(

Or some of us believe that one of the main causes of environmental damage should be taxed heavily.

I agree with that, although for the reason above rather than because prices are too high.

One would almost think from some of the posts on here that they are being forced at gunpoint to buy petrol, when the vast vast majority could get by in everyday life using public transport.

I disagree there . The country would grind to a halt if public transport was the only way of getting around.

Well at least we will have clean air to breathe whilst we walk to the shops for a loaf of bread for £10, or maybe might go the other way............delivery companies have to charge so high to cover there delivery costs, that its cheaper for everyone to go in their cars and buy the products instead of home delivery online, thus increasing pollution.

just wondering if anyones actually thought of having a petrol price protest, or just to let the gvnmnt know how pi***d off we really are about the price of fuel...

my plan would be to get as many people as possible throughout the uk to drive at 20 mph everywhere....... for as long as possible .

could you imagine the chaos.... even the guy wanting to rush would be doing 20 mph.... the goods in the van would be a bit late, and grid lock everywhere.... all it takes is a few car drivers to do 20 mph and voila.... chaos... much better than whatever they have planned , because it obviously isnt working ... we need to stick together on this one ..

i know there will be probs with ambulances and things but is it really our fault.... if the price wasnt so high we would not be so ****** off..

ultimatly the gvnmt is wholey responsible..

someone has to do something...lets get off our ass's and tell the gvnmnt enough is enough.....

I would guess that if you got traffic moving at 20 m.p.h. in a lot of cities there would be a lot of happy oeople.

Apparently, the UK has the second highest petrol prices in the world.

The UK also has a 'cradle to grave ' welfare system which includes a health service which is free to all at the point of provision, free schooling, and a generous benefits system.

If the government was to reduce the tax on petrol, how would it pay for the welfare state?

The 'raw material cost' for petrol - the price of crude oil - was $90 a barrel last June and it's $123 a barrel today. If the tax on petrol in the UK was a fixed sum (as opposed to a fixed sum plus a percentage), and if refining, marketing and transport costs had remained fixed then had the price rise been passed on to UK customers at the pumps, petrol prices would have risen by about 10% since last summer.

Has that happened?

The oil companies are indeed making vast profits, but the oil-producing countries have increased their charges, global demand is increasing (though demand in the world's biggest consumer, the US, has actually reduced) and it's probable that prices are going to continue to rise throughout this year.

In the US, where federal and state taxes on petrol are far lower than in the UK, the breakdown of petrol prices is as follows:

Price of crude oil - 68%

Federal and state taxes - 14%

Refining costs - 10%

Distribution and marketing costs - 5%

Profit margins - 3%

The price rise has been passed on to the consumers in the US. Petrol prices have from $3.26 a [uS] gallon in November to a little over $4.00 today - a 23% price rise. Americans a re still paying far less than Europeans for petrol, but the relative increase in costs is far greater for companies and the prices of a number of other things have risen sharply as a result.

I read a news article last week which suggested that Obama, Cameron and a number of other leaders are considering releasing some of the strategic reserves onto the market in an attempt to reduce prices. - I doubt that's just an attempt to increase popularity, but rather an attempt to reduce the effect on prices and on economic output.

Whether they will manage to do so or not - and whether the increased availability of oil would have more than a temporary effect - is another matter. Demand is increasing, supplies are not increasing by the same amount and it looks as if prices are going to go up still further.

I don't see the point in blockading a particular filling station, or even those with the badge of a particular company on them. Are (for instance) All BP filling stations owned by BP, or are they owned by individual operators who have a contract with BP to sell fuel under the BP brand name? (Fuel which probably comes from the same regional depot as other brands of fuel.)

If you boycott a particular filling station, then either the operator will go out of business quickly (by selling no fuel) or will go out of business more slowly (by selling fuel at a loss.) BP won't go out of business.

I doubt that the oil producers would care. There is plenty of demand for oil outside the UK.

Everyone should save up, get a mortgage or anything to buy an electric car. The more that switch electric the better.

But ang on, then we will be reliant on electricity and we have a deficit of that in this country with lack of investment and increased usage. So the prices of electricity will shoot through the roof.

Then the Government who is so reliant on the duty of oil products would then have to tax us some other way... by sticking it on the electricity we use more than likely.

You cannot win, the world is run by greed and is way over populated, this country is saturated and cannot take any more, our pockets are empty and the government cannot take any more so they think letting more here will mean more taxes which only exaggerates the problem further.

Moaning is all your left with, nothing you propose to do will change anything with any degree of significance, voting is a waste of time and is a sham to let people think there is choice and to have you believe you actually have a say in your life.
