I got the best canvasser to date on election night (Lab name of Jack Scott.)

Labour should be proud of him - very persuasive young man. Made him a deal to get me to the polling centre in return for my vote to which he agreed...(5 vote majority last time ).............................the car didnt turn up so i walked and voted lib dem.

Fell at the last hurdle jack if you are reading this..... you need to get elected BEFORE you break promises.

Labour didn't bankrupt anyone. The country is not bankrupt. The Government manages to find plenty of money when it wants to, whether it be loans to the IMF, bombing Libya, more quantitative easing, high speed rail, a bigger opening ceremony budget for the olympics, money wasted on mayoral referenda etc etc

The country is not bankrupt, there are just differing spending priorities.

You are right it is not bankrupt, the loans the government makes to the IMF it makes because as a founder member of the IMF and now being run by a government that knows what it is about it feels it has a moral duty to do. Similar to bailing out the Irish. (you know, the celtic tiger!!).

Bombing the Libyan army and preventing them massacring its own citizens is, in my view money well spent. Unlike invading Iraq and causing the slaughter of about 500,000. As well as causing the death of about 1000 British soldiers as was done by Blair Brown and the LABOUR party.

Quantitative easing is not good, but desperate times (caused by LABOUR) need desperate measures. When carried out by a government that is competent we should be concerned but not worried.

Investment in high speed rail is an investment in the future, it is good for business, business creates profit, profit creates taxes, taxes pay for your beloved public services.

The Olympics are a egocentric extravagance typical of the Blair Brown/LABOUR years, this government were lumbered with them and have had no choice but to see the event through.

The Mayoral system is also a LABOUR initiative.

You make substantive points, but remember where the blame lies.

Conveniently forgetting that most of their seats 'gained' have been done so via protest votes, with the coalition grinding to a halt.

Strangely you were calling recently for protest votes for UKIP against the 3 main parties. When people cast protest votes for Labour against the coalition parties you're suddenly opposed to protest votes. Funny that.

They should communicate with everyone, not those most likely to vote.

Politics in this country is tending towards ochlocracy.

Postal voters are more likely to vote, but the parties should think of all voters.

Old people are more likely to vote, but the parties should think of all people.

Homeowners are more likely to vote, but the parties should consider all people, especially private renters (those least likely to be registered to vote in the first place - because their precarious housing situation hinders their ability to vote)

What is ochlocracy? Please remember that us peasants have not had the benefit of swallowing a dictionary.

Fair point, but voting for LABOUR is a vote for envy, mediocrity, failure and bankrupcy.

Socialism is dangerous, it has nearly destroyed this country several times. For people to use the LABOUR party as a protest vote just encourages them.

Vote anything (but never ever LABOUR)

Ochlocracy means summat like government by mob rule.

Not a good idea, but then the present system is no longer working. Some wards had only 8% turnout. Shameful, but reflects the people's disillusionment with all current politicians.

Something has to change.

Introducing proportional representation systems for all elections would be a good start.

No, I think he means exactly what he typed. :)

Rule by the fickle crowd ... or mob rule?

You're correct, I must put my reading glasses on.

Not as funny as you think.

UKIP is more conservative than Cameron's cronies which explains why a large number of (ex-)Tories, such as myself have swapped allegiances. Baroness Warsi's BNP/UKIP comments show how desperate her party is becoming (and here was I thinking she was one of the more intelligent ones).

Without UKIP, I would have seriously struggled to vote yesterday. Personally, whilst appreciating the job the coalition has in front of them, I think they're making a right pig's ear of it. Perhaps many people of a right-wing standing felt like I did yesterday and thus decided not to vote at all?

In which case, the poor turn out reflects apathy on the right and an opportunity for the left to register their usual contempt for the opposition

Which is not too far off a 'protest' vote in my opinion.

I'll vote for who I want thanks although I no longer vote Labour. I don't think anyone has nearly destroyed this country several times. The country didn't go bankrupt. Large budget deficits, strikes, etc, don't mean the country is nearly destroyed or bankrupt.

For all its sins Labour was part of the wartime coalition and helped get the country back on its feet after the war. Labour still represents millions of people. Just because YOU don't vote for them doesn't mean they are going to nearly destroy the country. Get some perspective. The Tories caused massive recessions in the early 80s and early 90s and we're just into another one now.
