'Tower' near Bradfield

Always been fascinated by the Tower near Bradfield; have heard several stories as to its reason/past... wondered if anyone can shine more light on it for me?

its called Boots Folly....supposed to have been built by Charles Boot's workmen when they were short of work during the depression, but various urban myths exist about it.

it was built in the wrong orientation and the headstone bearing its date was laid upside down ,reading 1661 and not 1916 as specified.

No because the date is on two stones ,one being correctly orientated,the 61 being 19 and the 16 forming digits 3and 4.
