Sheffield Steel Industry

Recommended Posts

Just the way it is I'm afraid. The figures I have seen (but won't link as they aren't credible enough) are 8,000 employed compared to 45,000 in the 70's.

Forgemasters deserves a lot of credit for their own staff to buy the company out and invest in R&D. They are reaping the benefits.

Regarding whether Sheffield produces more steel than ever before, I am having trouble finding any decent links. I have seen a figure quoting 500,000 tonnes a year now being produced. Now predominately focusing on more specialised stuff. It's a waste of time produces plain steel as China and India have that end covered.

"The steel industry now concentrates on more specialist steel-making and, despite appearances, currently produces more steel per year than at any other time in its history." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Sheffield#cite_note-1

Sadly, the link from this quote onwards is now dead. But it does make sense that it could produces more than ever as a lot of it is mechanised these days to a larger extent. It needs to, in order to compete with the Far East.

Trust me it doesn't come close. The single plant, Tinsley Park Works (closed 1985) produced 500t pa on it's own, never mind all the many, many others!

Any links?

Only some old BSC data. It is very difficuilt to find the outputs of the local works as most of them closed down long before the advent of the internet.

Peter Fish at MEPS would have a good idea, as would of course the late Frazer Wright (The Stars old industrial editor).

I'm sorry but it was a simple question if you don't want to answer you don't have to. I have been to the library I've also been all around Sheffield interviewing people and to the steel works themselves. People have told me some cases of the industry being in the media but no-one knew much about this topic so I thought I would ask on here as it requires only people who know specifically about the topic to answer instead of asking people in the centre if they know about it when most generally do not.

It is also good to write in your assignment that you have also posted on a forum as this usually generates more answers instead of just interviewing people as it shows you are thinking of different ways to get answers.

Please do not judge people who you do not know.

There was a program on Fred Dibnah, who was travelling around the country on his steam roller. He visited a Sheffield steel manufacturers near Penistone Road, not as glamorous as The Full Monty I know.

Take no notice of the other poster he is talking out of his ass.

When doing a degree its obvious that sometimes you have to use all sources available.

The pop group Slade filmed part of their 1975 film Slade in Flame at a steel firm in Sheffield

Co-incidentally the same place Fred Dibnar visited and was mentioned in an earlier post. The company was Daniel Doncasters. The group were filmed working on a steam driven forge hammer called "Victoria".

The hammer was retired and is now in a museum somewhere in the midlands. Along with Noddy Holder I think:rolleyes:

Here is a link if you want to research the film.
