splodgeyAl   10 #229 Posted March 13, 2012 You would all have avoided all this trouble (and indeed embarrassment for some notable "maths experts" posting in the thread) if you'd stuck to the one true path of Reverse Polish Notation. Anyone else use Hewlett-Packard?    in RPN would look something like this 3 [enter] output------>3 0 * output------>0 5+ output------>5 (of course, you still need to know the operator precedence before you start, but RPN is always bracketless)   It's not computational fluid dynamics. Maybe it's not. But some complete ballistics have been spouted on this thread
 Share this content via...
Phanerothyme   12 #230 Posted March 13, 2012 Maybe it's not. But some complete ballistics have been spouted on this thread Touché.  Ballistics and rocket science aren't a million miles apart, in both senses.
 Share this content via...
rubydazzler   11 #231 Posted March 13, 2012 Huh? If you define a set of 8 things that you own, and then decide to give me zero of those sets, how many things have you given me?What? I'm not giving you anything ... get your own stuff!
 Share this content via...
splodgeyAl   10 #232 Posted March 13, 2012 What? I'm not giving you anything ... get your own stuff! That's exactly what I said!
 Share this content via...
rubydazzler   11 #233 Posted March 13, 2012 That's exactly what I said! Yeah, you keep your mitts off me tings!  Prize for most boring thread of the year ... this one! Now I realise how wise I was to give up on maths at an early stage. If all you people with your A levels, BSc, BEd etc, etc, can't agree, what chance do the rest of us have. Lockjaw   11 #234 Posted March 13, 2012 Yeah, you keep your mitts off me tings!  Prize for most boring thread of the year ... this one! Now I realise how wise I was to give up on maths at an early stage. If all you people with your A levels, BSc, BEd etc, etc, can't agree, what chance do the rest of us have.  It's not about agreeing ... It's simply that some people are wrong and some are right. Maths isn't a matter of opinion.  Also, not especially boring. It's raised a few laughs at my place of work!
 Share this content via...
denlin   12 #235 Posted March 13, 2012 (edited) Trust Google ;-)  5 + 3 * 0 = 5  Ha Ha google added brackets:hihi::hihi: Edited March 13, 2012 by denlin
 Share this content via...
Sparkler61 Â Â 10 #236 Posted March 13, 2012 I've just seen this thread, not read it all, but shouted my 12 y.o. son in. I asked him to do the sum and he says the answer is 5, did we come to that conclusion in previous posts? I've never heard of BODMAS, but i've just had it explained to me and you do the multiplication before the addition as stated in Post 5. HeadingNorth   11 #237 Posted March 13, 2012 Ha Ha google added brackets:hihi::hihi:  But in the right place, clearly, since it came to the correct answer.
 Share this content via...
rubydazzler   11 #238 Posted March 13, 2012 It's not about agreeing ... It's simply that some people are wrong and some are right. Maths isn't a matter of opinion. Also, not especially boring. It's raised a few laughs at my place of work! Yes, but you can't agree amongst you who IS right. If the experts can't agree, no wonder people like me lose interest early on due to not having it taught properly in the first place and then having too much choice of answers, mostly wrong!  Although provided I can work out my personal budget, sort out my accounts and know how many beans make 5, what use is the rest? Unless we want to be mathematicians or work in a related field.  I'll leave you now to carry on arguing amongst yourselves.
 Share this content via...
dosxuk   10 #239 Posted March 13, 2012 Yes, but you can't agree amongst you who IS right.  No, denlin (she) and willman (he) are maintaining that you don't use BODMAS unless there's brackets used (and other random rules we haven't been able to establish). Everybody else is saying their wrong, and using numerous sources to back up that opinion (including willman's source which doesn't say what he thought it did). denlin   12 #240 Posted March 13, 2012 But in the right place, clearly, since it came to the correct answer.  Yes - like this 5 + (3 * 0) = 5  Try asking for 8 (5 +3) * 0 and see what you get, it all depends how you ask the question:hihi::hihi:
 Share this content via...
