barleycorn   10 #124 Posted March 13, 2012 (edited) The BBC use BIDMAS the I refers to indices - "In BIDMAS, multiplication comes before addition, " IN BIDMAS not all the time. Anyone adding brackets to a sum makes it part of the BIDMAS/BODMAS rules, otherwise its left to right.  Strange, because here it says to follow BODMAS  http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks3bitesize/maths/number/order_operation/revise1.shtml and here http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/maths/number/orderoperationrev1.shtml  jb Edited March 13, 2012 by barleycorn
 Share this content via...

willman   10 #126 Posted March 13, 2012 So, if I think about this as 6 customers buying a coffee and bun, we have: 6 x 1.05 + 3.50, which is £9.80!!!  Three versions of the same sum - three different answers because BODMAS does not apply?  Honestly - one can only laugh!  Thats not the same sum at all, you've changed it completely. max   13 #128 Posted March 13, 2012 1. 6 3. 8.75 4. 17.5 what happened to question 2?  Question 1 from Willman's own link gives the answer as 7:  Order of Operations are: * Parentheses (Brackets) first * Exponents (Orders, Powers, Square Roots, etc.) next * Multiplication and Division (left-to-right) next * Addition and Subtraction (left-to-right) last  Therefore, we do the division first, then the multiplication and finally the addition:  3 + 6 ÷ 3 × 2 = 3 + 2 × 2 = 3 + 4 = 7  Notice there are no brackets but still BODMAS applies.
