The Abbey pub, Woodseats

Recommended Posts

Goodbye Bowling Green. RIP.

That will be a real shame IMHO. Surely the improvements and new management have got to offer better than All You Can Eat contests; they even had one for kids.

They can't touch the bowling green. The council has refused to let them do anything to it for decades. In the new refurb they are actually replacing the fence around it.

The green is in regular use and every night this week the club has used it so far.

The Green probably attracts more people than the pub then!

I know nothing about the bowling club at the Abbey these days but back in the day when it had active social, football and bowling clubs the complaint was always that most of the bowlers didn't drink in the pub but just used the facilities. It was a major bone of contention with the brewery and with most of the landlords.

Have they announced what it's going to be? Has it been bought by a chain? What kind of demographic are they targeting?

It is still owned by Punch Taverns as it has been for years.

And therein lies the problem. Woodseats could do with a decent pub. I went to Chantry to watch the last England match and had to ask someone to stop hurling racist abuse at our players so we decamped later to Big Tree which ain`t great either imo.

Understand it will reopen on 18th August.

While still owned by punch the chain name will be different - Eagle inns I think.

The work I understand involves new kitchen equipment , new toilets including disabled, changes to seating layout & tables/ decking on part of bowling green

Upstairs the old stage will be removed a toilet and bar installed so it becomes a function room, a staff room/ office will also be provided.

They were the plans a few weeks ago

Do you think, come the revolution, it would be acceptable to take all the Chief Executives of these brewery companies who are making it impossible for the British pub to survive, and execute them, or something trivial like that?

Yes the Abbey looks almost ready to open. They have been working on it seven days a week for the last few weeks.

The inside has been refreshed and rebuilt. and the outside area around the rear has been updated and smartened up.

They have opened new patio areas around the bowling green and added new modern outdoor seating.

There are planters with funky shrubs as well.

They even resurfaced the car park so it is looking extremely good and very tidy now.
