Help_needed Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Hey guys just a quickie how do you all load line onto your reels. I used to stick a pencil through the spool and ask my son to hold it while i reeled in using the butt of my rod and threaded through the eyes for assistance. Anyways i was talking to a bloke at work who is always inventing things and he came in today with this for me. Should be a useful bit of kit hopefully and i have a new reel that needs line so i may try it out tonight. Cheers Jonny
spankysufc Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 what i do is attach the reel to the bottom section of the rod, then i put the spool of line in a bucket of water and reel in.
Help_needed Posted March 8, 2012 Author Posted March 8, 2012 I heard this was a good idea from Animal too.
charliewag Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 a bit of detergent in the water helps to de-grease the line.
bigsexydoug Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 i use the same method as spanky, but i always use a hand to keep the line tight onto the spoool as its being wound in
sully84 Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 The way i do it is to have myself a nice long bath & when i get out i drop my spool of line in & leave it for about an hour in the lukewarm water. I then leave the spool in the bath, feed my line round the back of the tap on the sink to keep it tight & stand halfway down my landing whilst reeling my line on. Slightly strange i know but it means i can spool at reel anytime i want in the warm of my house!
charliewag Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 i hope you get dried first otherwise you're going to drip water on your landing carpet!
alphlonewolf Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 All good methods guy's ,just make sure you dont load the line on too tight.
Muldoon Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 It's a whole different ball game for loading a fly line onto a fly reel. It takes me the best part of half an hour to load one line on correctly. Having loaded my reel with a suitable backing line (I prefer using the new carp braids for this) I then take the bottom section of my fly rod with reel affixed and head off to the local football pitch ? Once there I carefully unwind all the line hank into a streight length on the grass, this gets any twists out of the line from coiling it up. I then feed the line through the two 'eye's' on the bottom section of the rod and attach to the backing line with a backing connector and apply a few drops of super glue to secure. The flat laid line is then slowly wound in, making sure that it is evenly spread across the spool. The weight of the laid out line ensures it is the correct tension on the reel and totally devoid of any loop twists. The fly line is then ready for the first few mock casts to ensure any memory in the line is teased out. Sounds a lot of faffing about but when accurate and gentle presentation is paramount, it pays to take a little time to get your line on the spool correctly.
sheff 13 Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 It doesn't sound like faffing to me, there's no substitute for attention to detail.
