Did You Live On The Manor Estate In The 50s And 60s?

Recommended Posts

I lived on the Manor Estate, Ravencarr Rd, through the 50's and early 60's, and I wondered if anyone knew the following tearaways from around that time, and what they're doing now? : Dave Mossman, John Day, Tony Wespy. all on Paulet Rd. Norman Elgie( Elgy?) also known as 'NoNo' on Darcy Close. Eddie Lister, Brian Jacobs, Jimmy White, on Fairfax Rd and John Connelly, Stanground Road.

I lived on Stonecliffe Rd 50's/60's. Unfortunately memories have faded & so have names but these I remember for many reasons: Wraggs, Noonans, Fosters, Graysons, Weeds, Pallister, Malones on Harborough Avenue. Palmer, Hotchkiss, Bainbridge, Betson, Drabble, Allen, Dolby, Beeby(?) Wilson, Toogood all around Ravencarr and Stonecliffe Road

Don't remember any of those names Jack. Guess like you said you need a good reason to remember some of them. Maybe like got into some mischief together with them or being in their gang etc

I think you're right there Vera, if you didn't get into any trouble or have somebody's mam coming to your door to complain, you didn't tend to socialise much. After all we weren't exactly part of the 'Cocktails before dinner crowd' on't Manor! By the way, does anyone remember that poor soul we all called 'Mad Harry'? He was around thirty years old I think, mentally retarded and walked with a limp. He was always up and down our street going to the shops on Prince of Wales Rd, usually with his poor old mam. I feel so ashamed, now I'm older, at the names we used to call him.

Remembered some more names of people living in houses bordering 'the field' on Harborough Avenue: Swift, Ward, Fenton, Cowlishaw, Hobson, Doherty and a lad we called Ronnie Onions but I can't remember his real name.

I was thinking about the various street traders who operated on the estate in the late 50's early 60's: Craig's ice cream with his trilby in his green and cream Fordson van (I think he had a blue and cream one too), B & C co-op mobile shops, the tripe man in his grey van who used to announce his presence with a hand bell, Fentimans soft drinks, A bloke (who may have been called Mr Fidler) selling fruit and veg from a horse and cart, some old lad who used to sell firewood from a horse and cart in the winter months. There were also two blokes who used to deliver horse manure in an ancient and smelly Dennis lorry. One was the brains, the other one carried the manure in an old dustbin on his back- he had a suspiciously well tanned back of the neck and forearms. The brains had a permanent 'pooh! wot a stink expression' and carried a loo brush for dispersing spillage from the carriers neck and shoulders! Anybody know any more?
