Remember the bike shop corner of Leppings lane, in the 1950s it was always busy. I went back to Hillsborough over New Year and its still there, cannot recall his name but he was a small round chap with specs on the end of his nose.

Every locality in the old days had a favourite local shop.

Many were run by real characters, some were popular for running a strap bill, others for stocking unusual items and some were popular just for a good chinwag.

Did you have a favourite shop or a memory of a particular shop in the Owlerton/Hillsbro area?

Happy Days!

My favourite was Paulines on penistone road ,just next to the post office and beer off, bottom of burnell rd.she sold a vast selection of sweets.she also sold wool, not that us kids were interested in that.i also liked the drippin'cakes from lily glovers pork shop ,delicious on both counts.

I guess that depends what you define as the old days.

My "old days" would be the late fifties/early sixties.

On Bradfield Road there was "Cheethams" the newsagents (paper shop we called it).Got mi first job as a paper lad there.

I only mention that because I can't remember the name of the sweet shop just below that (walking towards Owlerton).

The sweet shop was my favourite.

That, and the chip shop at the top of Rudyard Road.

Does anyone remember the chip shop on Bradfield Rd opposite the bottom of Hawksley Avenue.I always went in there on my way home at night after going out with my girlfriend, the bloke who owned it was Asian or Indian his wife was a real battleaxe she looked like Peggy Mount,if she said it was Thursday it was Thursday you crossed her at your peril!.This was early 60s I think they moved to another chippy on the Manor years later I delivered to her there, she could really turn out the language if you didn,t have the amount of breadcakes she wanted, the vanlad was terrified of her I wouldn,t fancy fighting her myself and I could handle myself!! Scary!!:suspect::confused:

old tup.....

Only used the chip shop on Bradfield Road once. They were crap!

Found the one a few minutes walk away.

Rudyard Road chippy was just brilliant.

The only use I found for the Bradfield Rd chippy was "Penny for the Guy" night.

Collected my pennnies and headed to Rudyard Road.

When I worked at Goddards it was the son Ashley Goddard who was always in the Crown knocking it back,he was middle aged then always dressed very smart he had a problem with the drink, all the wagon delivery men where told not to give him the cash takings because he would be straight across the road into the crown and tiddle it all up the wall!!.:help::hihi::hihi:
