rodnreeluk   10 #37 Posted February 24, 2012 Rodnreeluk, your point number 3. are you confusing the people who have IE or the people who chose to have it?  take a look a the stats for downloads of IE 9, FF 4 and Chrome.  FF4 has 4 times as many downloads. Chrome comes above ie by a percentage  so. people who CHOSE their browsers seem to chose FF. then Chrome, then IE.  Stats Here (as at Feb 18th 2012)  upsdell.com/BrowserNews/stat_trends.htm  Says 55% for IE
 Share this content via...
Beakerzoid   10 #38 Posted February 24, 2012 Internet Explorer was part and parcel of Windows - full stop. No collation of your browsing habits, etc, as there was no point. You had already bought the operation system licence and that was the end of the matter.  So you mean they don't collate the browsing habits and use it for their own search engine (Bing), or for their own research purposes? Strange, as they say they do just that in amongst the T&C agreement when you install IE.
 Share this content via...
Beakerzoid   10 #39 Posted February 24, 2012 Most people aren't tech savvy. I have even spoken to some older folks who think IE is the internet. They don't go looking for alternatives because they aren't aware that there are any, never mind doing things like changing CPUs and graphic cards.  My mother fits into that group perfectly. She was experiencing some issues with websites she was trying to access, and as a quick fix until i could get over to sort her PC out I told her to use another browser. She installed Chrome.  Now she has a new laptop, the first thing she did was install Chrome on there as it is her browser of choice now. She no longer refers to 'IE' as 'My internet icon'
 Share this content via...

And yes, Chrome can download 'things'.
 Share this content via...
Cyclone   10 #41 Posted February 24, 2012 This whole discussion amazes me. How anyone can come out with this driffle is beyond belief. Internet Explorer has been on the go for over 12 years, whereas Google Chrome is still a work in progress. Do you think Google is a charity? It is a commercial organisation and gets its money from advertisers. That is why Google Chrome is free. The primary function of any Google software is to collect a large number of users and information about them. The more users, the more attractive they become to prospective advertisers. The more they know about you, the more targetted adverts can be. To achieve this they monitor your browsing activity (and don't differentiate between visiting your bank account or a porn site) and store this information to sell on. Until recent legislation which forced Microsoft to become more open to other browsers, Internet Explorer was part and parcel of Windows - full stop. No collation of your browsing habits, etc, as there was no point. You had already bought the operation system licence and that was the end of the matter. You had paid for it. The fact that Internet Explorer is the browser of choice for over 50% of internet users says it all. The other 40-odd percent is split between browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera, and a mutitude of others. It is much more logical to believe the majority is correct than one of the many minorites.  The majority are obviously idiots (seriously, they've bought a PC from PC world and use it as it arrived). The market share for IE has been falling steadily for years, the only reason it ever became popular was because it came with windows, it still does and that's why some people use it. It's a terrible browser to develop for, it's not standards compliant and it's slow. I have to use it for work, but normally I wouldn't go near it! Cyclone   10 #42 Posted February 24, 2012 (1) It hasn't been installed as standard for at least a couple of years, so many of the 50% may not have changed - simply made a different choice. It is so easy to download a different browser the argument "installed as standard" is very weak, especially when compared to Chrome, which is heavily advertised by Google, whereas Internet Explorer receives no advertising at all. It is still installed when you install windoze though. (2) You are ignoring the fact that the other 50% is split between several browsers - still making 50% for IE impressive. Disappointing would be my adjective of choice. (3) The discussion is about the merits, or otherwise, of Google Chrome, and all my earlier comments still stand. Whichever way you look at it, Chrome is there to make money for Google, and more than double the number of internet users choose Internet Explorer than choose Chrome. How is you think Chrome makes money for google again?
 Share this content via...

rodnreeluk   10 #48 Posted February 25, 2012 So you mean they don't collate the browsing habits and use it for their own search engine (Bing), or for their own research purposes? Strange, as they say they do just that in amongst the T&C agreement when you install IE.  Bing is a search engine, not a browser but, yes, I agree with you that, with Bing, though not Internet Explorer, Microsoft have decided to copy Google and invade your privacy. I don't know if this is to make money or purely for research.
 Share this content via...
