RabM Â Â 16 #37 Posted January 29, 2015 Dim Sum on London Road is my favourite - the gai lan in garlic is a big reason I eat there. Only tried a dim sum from there once (cha sui bao) and it had too little filling and made it too dry - may have been a one off. Their scallop and so on starter specials have all been really tasty. Pho68 is tasty and very good value if you can finish your plate. Decent singapore noodle. Same with HK Wok across road. I'll need to try some of the others mentioned. My 9 year old likes the Landmark buffet but it's pretty poor. The boiled rice is always stodgy - some of the sauces seem like they use the techniques my Cantonese ex-wife's family did in their takeaway - bottles of supermarket fruit squash to cut price etc. Not saying they do but they remind me of it. Ade65   10 #38 Posted February 2, 2015 The last decent Chinese I had was at Hui Wei on Glossop Road/West St. I prefer my food cooked to order so I don't do buffets. I'm not being precious, I've been to some in the past but the food was either passable at best or I've spent the evening speaking to Ralph.  At the relatively new U-buffet on West St, you can get food cooked freshly; limited (but not too limited) options, but very nice, fresh and tasty. alternageek   10 #39 Posted February 2, 2015 Quality over quantity, any day. Hui Wei gets a huge thumbs up from me.
 Share this content via...
mossdog   10 #40 Posted February 3, 2015 (edited) I have to say we had the most disappointing food at Hui Wei after all the hype.We really wished we had not gone. Style over content would aptly describe our experience. We must have caught it on a bad night, which admitted, can happen at any restaurant. We will not be back however. The only class Chinese/Cantonese restaurant to have been in Sheffield was the Kwok Man in Charles street Sheffield........................but that was many moons ago. It was before it's time and too expensive probably for Sheffield in those days! Edited February 3, 2015 by mossdog
 Share this content via...
Jinkyj   10 #41 Posted February 3, 2015 Does anyone go to Candytown on London Road these days? Used to go years ago and loved their crispy duck, but have stayed away from Chinese food recently after overdoing it on a trip to China.  Bill
 Share this content via...

Used to go years ago and loved their crispy duck, but have stayed away from Chinese food recently after overdoing it on a trip to China. Bill  I went late last year; it's the same as always, with the traditional selection of familiar cantonese dishes (chili beef, sweet and sour pork, chicken with cashews, crispy duck, etc). Alright for what it is, and great service, but the food is not exciting.
 Share this content via...
RabM Â Â 16 #44 Posted February 7, 2015 Tried Noodle Doodle on Trippet Lane today. We had chilli shredded chicken (nice, could have been a little spicier), satay kebabs (ditto), chum soi with lots of garlic (very nice) and Peking pork with pancakes. The latter was a little rich but very nice, be good to share round a larger table. Very nice chinese tea. The service was good and friendly. Place itself recently repainted and is very clean though you can see where they painted over stuff that could have been replaced. I suspect they were on a budget. They have north eastern chinese, peking, szechuan and malaysian dishes. I plan to go back when I'm next in town and try some more. One tip - when you go in try to get a table on the right as we got a cold draft on the left side when the door opened.
 Share this content via...

Alright for what it is, and great service, but the food is not exciting.  I still like CandyTown. It had a period about a year/18 months ago, when I thought it was going downhill badly. I stopped going for a while but on the last visit a few weeks ago it was back up to standard.  They offer a big range of dishes, the crispy duck is particularly good, and it isn't expensive. I also like the fact they do big bottles of sake.
 Share this content via...
PeteM01 Â Â 10 #46 Posted February 9, 2015 Candytown is to Chinese food what the Harvester chain is to British. We can do so much better in Sheffield now.
 Share this content via...

If all you ever order is sweet and sour chicken nuggets it probably doesn't matter where you go
 Share this content via...
