crime figures down - surplus to requirements

What about all the lives they at SYP Air Ops have helped save over the years? if it wasn't for them I probably wouldn't be alive and well now they do an excellent job.

SYP and the Police Authority have had their hand forced by a Minister. The forecasted 'savings' are quoted at something in the region of £660k per year. Given the total budget for the operation then that still leaves a large amount that one assumes will go into the National Air Support pot. It will be interesting to see what the return is in terms of incidents attended, pro active tasking etc etc from those units contracted to provide Air Support to SYP. A sceptic might see it as a very expensive way of getting that type of very specialised service without any of the benefits....time will tell.

Not seen any discussion from SYP or the Authority as to how they intend to dispose of the machine and all the ancillaries that make up the unit. In these times of austerity I wouldn't think there will be a huge demand for such a specialist tool.

Personally I think politics has overtaken common sense (old story) and policing in South Yorkshire has taken something of a backward step.

The projected saving from joining NPAS is in the region of 300K. (Based on figures from NPAS, which are currently being investigated).

The full SYP budget is 256 million.

The "proposed" saving is therefore 0.12% of the annual budget... !!!!

The existing aircraft will be GIVEN to NPAS as part of the deal. (it belongs to the police authority.)

NPAS are selling the proposal as an improvement to the existing service. However the public arent being told that the UK helicopter fleet is being reduced by one third nationally, and are assuring people that more can be achieved with less.

My personal opinion is that some services should be ring fenced. Especially when the saving amounts to 0.12%.. !

If the figure you have quoted is correct that is an absolute disgrace? is 300k!!! worth risking people's lives for? also is it worth risking the potential rise in crime aswell which will no doubt cost alot more than 300k!!.

SYP Air ops must be kept in South Yorkshire not only does it play a vital role in tracking down criminals it helps save people's lives too :) now that is something you simply cannot put a price on.

I have to apologise to the forum. The figures of 300 thousand pounds I quoted may well be incorrect.

The police authority are quoting savings today of 700 hundred thousand pounds...

So the saving on the annual budget is not 0.12%

Its 0.27% of the police budget...

(however if you check todays webcast from the police authority, the savings being quoted are HIGHLY dubious).

So for a saving of a quarter of one percent, we lose our helicopter and have to beg and borrow from West Yorks... (who are keeping theirs)

excellent...!!!

No amount of money is worth people's lives let alone the paltry sum of 700k!! :mad:I will be on Radio Sheffield in the morning and LN in the evening doing my bit to try and help SY Air Ops after they saved me and my partner.

The people of South Yorkshire need to get behind SYP Air Ops and support them all the way we cannot allow the Government to take away such a vital resource.
