It's being converted to run on wind power. The spinning of the blades on top will provide its power.

Unless something has changed recently the police don't own the helicopter to be able to sell it.

It's owned and operated by a private company who run the helicopter, pilots and ground staff. The police provide the observers. Memory fails me on the firms name.

Before long we will see a proliferation of civil and police drones overhead.

Hasn't a Yorkshire company just been granted a license to operate them?

You tried contacting the press office? You will get an answer just like that.

Does anyone know what the police helicopter does all the time up there? Please no smart alec answers - but it wakes me up regularly - most recent was Weds night/Thurs morning - over Sharrow/London Road at 2am. I would love to know what they are doing up there? What they can see? Etc etc ... it must cost a fortune. I did ring them once but of course they couldn't tell me - I demand to know! Would a FOI request work do you think?

they can see everything, infra red cameras etc are really useful if you are looking for someone at night.

FOI request could probably help find out the amount of "air time" but i doubt they could provide details of what they are doing. It could possible jeopardise an investigation.

You really don't know what the police helicopter is doing in the sky? Is this a wind up?

No! It is NOT a wind up. Obviously the helicopter is doing fine police work (!) - I just wonder what it is doing at 2am over Sharrow all the time. I do apologise for asking but what was the point of your reply? Tahnk you Mike and as for the other answer - I have no idea what that means?

I once heard that even though they are over an area, with the cameras they have onboard it could be working miles away (not sure on the figures)

Unfortunately criminals don't usually work a 9-5, mon to fri and as you live in one of the less desirable areas of Sheffield I'm afraid your nightmare isn't about to end anytime soon. But as I'm sure this is a wind up I'm gonna shut up now.
