azzer_01 Â Â 10 #49 Posted January 10, 2012 Have they stopped the lights from the former superbowl entrance yet? This was part of the problem. The sequencing here actually has a period for the junction here to let traffic out. The wonderful thing, of course, being that this road isn't actually in general use yet! What a waste! Â Even if they did stop this though, all it would mean is that when that part of the retail park eventually (hopefully) opens, traffic will still be just as congested. Â The layout of Penistone Road in general is just ridiculous though, a major arterial route that becomes a ring road and there are traffic lights every 200 yards from the top of Deerlands avenue all the way along! On busy dual carriageway roads like this, they have to put signals in so that drivers can safely exit the side roads or turn right into them and pedestrians can safely cross. Â People complain when the Council blocks off side roads and bans turns so that main road traffic flows better and they still complain when they keep them open! The Council can't win can they? The Council can't win can they?  Well they could do, by not having a set of traffic lights on every minor road opening onto Penistone Road. Even on a busy road like this there is still a gap now and again, and even if you made those junctions left turn only, it would still be a big improvement.  And they could also win by repairing the sensors on the lights at the end of Claywheels Lane so the large amount of traffic on both sides of the main road isn't stopped every two minutes to let a non-existent vehicle out. That would be nice if they had enough money to keep all the inductive loop detectors working. They don't. Â Unfortunately, in some locations, the road surface is in such poor condition, they can't recut the detector loops.
 Share this content via...

metalman   21 #54 Posted January 10, 2012 And then we'd have the usual complaints from the usual suspects about banning turns, making it more difficult for motorists, anti car etc etc!  But I seem to remember that in the Penistone Road smart route plan which came to nothing, the plan was to do exactly that with the exit from Morrisons, which would have affected a lot more people than it would for many of the little roads around the Leisure Centre for example. Given that the road is already a dual carriageway for much of its length I don't see anything particularly wrong with that.
 Share this content via...

You've spent taxpayers cash on installing traffic lights that you can' t afford to maintain. Not exactly well planned was it? But hey, Its only motorists that suffer. When did the council ever give a damn about them.
 Share this content via...

Planner1 Â Â 424 #58 Posted January 10, 2012 Great work planner1. You've spent taxpayers cash on installing traffic lights that you can' t afford to maintain. Not exactly well planned was it? But hey, Its only motorists that suffer. When did the council ever give a damn about them. Most of the money for installing and maintaining highway infrastructure comes from the government. Â For as long as I can remember there has always been money to build new things, but never enough to maintain them properly. It's the same everywhere, there is a huge, multi-billion pound backlog of highway maintenance work nationwide and the vast majority of it is down to many years of government underfunding for maintenance activities. Â The Council spends tens of millions of pounds every year on maintaining, improving and upgrading the highway network, all for the benefit of motorists, so saying that the Council never cared about motorists is a plainly ridiculous statement. Â What would you have them do? Not bid for money to build the Inner Relief Road because they may not be able to maintain it to the standard we'd all like in 20 years time?
