bassett-boys Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Another ex manager summing up the United I know best basically. For those who didnt see it Spackman spoke about how the board sold players behind his back despite the team doing so well which led to him resigning. Apparently he turned up to training one morning to find no Brian Deane or Jan Aage Fjortoft so phoned up the chairman to ask if they knew why and was told that they would speak to him after training about it. Spackman wasnt having any of it so marched in to demand an explanation as to why and was told basically that Deane had been sold to Benfica and Fjortoft to Barnsley. Spackman basically summed up a United unfortunately that we all know too well. He couldnt understand why we were selling our top players when we were going so well that season. We reached the semi final of the cup which we lost against Newcastle and were flying in the league so they had no need to sell but he said in a nutshell that the board bottled it and sold him out which led to him seeing no future at the lane. The final straw was the sale of Don Hutchinson who was also on the show to Everton again behind his back. Wonder how many more times we will hear stories like these about United.
Robbie Loving Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 What always baffled me about Spackman, was that he only was 'successful' as a manager with us. He led us to a good position in the league, and I think the quarter final (we went on to the semis when he left if I recall rightly) of the FA Cup. I thought he may go on to better things, just no idea why it never happened.
