I think the OP view is 'proof in the reading' of their personal experience of people on her land with her much loved animals.

If I kept having my animals attacked, haressed or people just generally abusing and disrespecting my property which they have been generously allowed on I would be very upset and angry too.

You seem to be taking this post personal to you? Which is strange, as you've stated you are not one of those people that abuse privileges like the above. If you are not one of these people, then you shouldn't be bothered by this post - or if anything, just as annoyed at people who ruin it for people like yourselves who are responsible, no?

well said

I'm referring to the comment "It is our land, these people are just honoured to have a path through it".

It may be their land but it's not a walkers "honour" to have access to it, it's a right of law.

Believe me, i'm sick of idiots in the countryside too and i often find myself being abused when i point out to people their dogs should be on a lead near livestock, you just can't educate some people.

As i've said, i do sympathise, but i don't like the condescending tone, and the nimby remark pointed out above.

If her horses are being harassed by dogs, shoot them.[/QUOT

 is that lawful?

We have, and it broke >.<

Problem is also, especially in this weather, the wood swells and can be hard to push shut and open.

I think i will get a latch for it to be honest, at least for when we're in the garden with the dog.

Have you considered erecting a small coral inside the gate so that when members of the public enter your garden they are not at the mercy of your dog immediately, and it offers time for you to perhaps secure him while they walk through?

Apply for a shotgun license, place up appropriate signs and shoot any dogs that are not kept on lead, you have the legal right to do so.

I'm not sure what the laws are around it but I do know farmers can legally shoot a dog if it is endangering livestock there was a small terrier on here last week that got loose and a farmer shot and killed it as it was worrying the cows :( wrong but apparently lawful. :/ as both a horse owner and dog owner I know the damage that can be caused to/by either animal and its not nice. My own dogs are loose around my ponies but that's only because they have grown up around them and respect them (been collies they live been around the farm lol) but I would never ever dream of going into someone else's horse field with them off lead, weather walkers have the right of way or not you all have to agree that it takes a pretty stupid person to let there dogs dice with death around these massive animals? I too would be pretty narked if people let there dogs off in my field that I pay for. My pony was attacked by annother horse owners dog a few years back and it was awful blood everywhere his face was a mess all because the dog had gone up to him in the field so he bent down to sniff it :( the dog went on to attack two other horses and bite its owners child on the face, it still roams round that farm now... But as op said the mental damage it causes to equines is unbelievable it took months for my pony to even let a dog be nearby without freaking out :( x

Maybe my attitude is caused by the people who are so damn ignorant, towards not only my horses but anyones horses who are kept in fields with the dreaded footpath scenario. If you owned horses, you may see why us owners get so narked with it! It is not alot to ask to pop a dog on a lead for a matter of minutes. As it happens, we have moved off the land now after an attack. Do you have any idea how it feels to see your beloved animal in agony, bleeding and scared due to nothing but ignorance of people who see the word public and think it is their god given right to do what the hell they please and sod everyone/thing else? Probably not and i hope you never will.

Oh i may have an attitude where this is concerned, but its high time people were held accountable. If a dog attacked a human in this way, they would be put to sleep. Not on at all and am glad to be out of there where my horses are safe, i feel sorry for the next tenants who have it all to come. I couldnt take anymore of it i pay tens of thousands out every year for my hobby and the love of my animals, now shove a whacking great vets bill on top of that, thanks to some dog walkers 'attitude'.

And no, just shooting a dog for harassing livestock isnt as clear cut as you would think...a horse isn't a farm animal and dont seem to have as many rights. Disgusting really. I'm guessing the ones who have called me on this thread, are non horse owners, who would happily allow dogs off leads in horse fields, i suppose that is the nature of the beast, but all i can say is i hope your dogs never antagonise a horse so much it ends up with its face caved in. 600kg of horse can do some serious damage. Likewise, a dogs jaw can end a horses life.
