ponybabes Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 I wish dog owners would realise the importance of keeping their cherished muts on leads, whilst walking through land with livestock in it. I am actually sick to death of hearing "well its not gone for a horse YET" so thats ok then is it? no quite frankly it is not, having had my horse attacked by a dog only last week, i am urging dog owners to keep them on leads! especially through peoples fields with there own beloved animals in. I am sick of my ponies being harassed my dogs and law or not, i would quite happily dispose of the next one who has a go at one of my horses! It is our land, these people are just honoured to have a path through it, my horses are very unlikely to approach a dog, or harm it in anyway, unless it is running about by their legs, as often happens. So please people, think about your dogs AND my horses, a dogs face or rib cage is not going to withstand 16 hand of horse booting it, nor are my horses legs going to withstand your dogs jaw wrapped around it, this is just common sense and sadly pure ignorance, on the dog owners behalf! This is my rant for 2012, i dont want anymore injuries or to have to literally boot people and their dogs out of my field, so lets just use the brains we were born with please dog walkers and show some damn respect!
mc55 Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 is it a private field, or a right of way ? I'd be inclined to get some simple signs laminated and stuck somewhere visible as people enter the field, saying something like, please keep your dog on it's lead whilst walking through this field
ponybabes Posted January 1, 2012 Author Posted January 1, 2012 We are unlucky that we have a footpath through the field, honest we have put signs up,they have been ripped down, we have asked politely and, sadly, not so politely! The signs get ignored, the sheer ignorance of some of these people amazes me...so they have left me no option, but to install mains electric fencing at each side of the path, with the required space between to keep the ruddy things away from my horses. Its like people just dont give a damn, i wouldnt mind but after the short walk through our field there is 100's of acres of land and footpaths with no animals on, why they cant just put them on whilst they walk through is beyond me!
mc55 Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 oh yes that was going to be my next suggestion if it was a right of way - some sort of fencing - but terribly expensive for you. It'll take a while, but you could start a hedge growing so that the right of way becomes an enclosed bit of it's own ?
ponybabes Posted January 1, 2012 Author Posted January 1, 2012 Yes very expensive, we are going to use posts, with mesh metal fencing to keep the dogs contained and hopefully find some hedging that is part grown to run down each side too, no i dont want the expense, however the vets bills and mental damage done to a horse that has been attacked, is nothing in comparison...i am going off dogs, rapidly! My own dog is on a lead whilst round the horses, fair play its a 20 metre lead but he is on it and under control...have seen some real damage done to doggy in the past, rib cage kicked in, but to be fair, it deserved it, was having a go at the horse, likewise i have witnessed terrible damage to a horse face and throat. It is just sensible all round if they are kept on leads, try explaining that, to the numpties round here!
thorphanger Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Really can't understand why people don't put their dogs on leads near horses my little dog was kicked totally accidently on the head by one of our horses, she was very lucky not to lose her eye. She just ran into the back of the horse when she ran away from me. Has never gone in the field again. Horses will kick out at dogs and if dog owners only realised the damage that can be done. I for one always put my dogs on the lead whether it is a field of horses, cows or sheep.
ponybabes Posted January 2, 2012 Author Posted January 2, 2012 Braindead, springs to mind with these dog owners, if they had a functioning brain, they would keep them on leads, its not just the dogs at risk, but my rather expensive competition ponies too! if one of their doggies gets kicked, im afraid its tough, i have asked enough times and sick to death of explaining myself now
nubile Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 We are unlucky that we have a footpath through the field Which will have been there before you acquired the land no doubt.
ponybabes Posted January 2, 2012 Author Posted January 2, 2012 Completely and utterly irrelevant, the land has ALWAYS had livestock in it and people have always been ignorant and disrespectful! the foot path is the bain of our lives, threats to burn down stables with horses in it, drunks from the local village pub being aggressive with the children, dogs attacking horses, the list is endless, it seems these days no one has any respect for anyone, nor their property, footpath or not.
Lotti Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 I'm sorry to hear you're having this trouble I can't understand why, even if people didn't care about your horses, why they would risk their dogs' safety... but then I often think the same when I see people walking dogs offlead on main roads. Why do it?? It's insane. I've had the misfortune of coming across a field during a walk that I did not know had horses in it, nor did I even realise it was there but my deaf dog got in and I couldn't. Thankfully the owner of the horses happened to turn up at the same time and let me in to go and get her. We rarely walk there now but when we do both of my dogs go on leads as we pass that field because, being dalmatians, they LOVE horses and are inherently attracted to them but I wouldn't risk them getting in there again. I hope you manage to find an answer but sadly it seems it might be the expensive fencing option You just can't rely on other people.
