0742Sheff Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 This will be my first 'smart' phone and i will will probably be keeping it for 2 years. I don't know anything about apps but my brother informs me it 'needs' to play some bird game, so that would be a bonus. The phones i can have are: Galaxy Mini Galaxy Ace Galaxy Y HTC Wildfire S HTC Explorer Xperia mini pro (latest model) If i bump up my contract by a few quid i can have different phones but i would prefer to stick to one of these if any of them are worth it. I am looking for any and all info about these phones, other phones not on the list (no need to bother with iPhones), and info about apps and the best ones to use.
ElasticMan Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 If you can afford it, try to get the Desire S instead. The phones you listed are very much the bottom end of the market for Android phones - the Desire S should be available reasonable cheaply, but has a better processor, better screen and much bigger internal storage (for installing apps).
0742Sheff Posted January 1, 2012 Author Posted January 1, 2012 The stats on it seem to be about the same as the Mini Pro on first inspection. Is the 1Ghz processor in the Desire S much better than in the Mini Pro? I could probably get the Desire S if it came to it but that would be taking up in price plan for 24 months. After a quick look online it seems comparable to the iPhone 4 so it can't be that bad.
medusa Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 I've got a Motorola Defy as my first smartphone and I really rather like it. My previous phones were all Nokias (the most recent being an N95 and an N86) so this is my first Android phone and I've put very little on it other than k9mail and a few news apps, but it seems to do everything I need it to do and it's not as fragile as most other smartphones, which is fabulous for me.

The Xperia Mini has a small low resolution screen, stay away from the ones with tiny low res screens, they'll be next to useless for web browsing, etc. 480x800 is the minimum to go for.
alternageek Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 I have a Wildfire (not the S) and its my first smartphone. Im rather happy with it. Battery life is decent (I made it last over a camping trip for 4 days without needing a charge - but this was turning off everything that makes it a smartphone) and seems to take a beating with case on it (Ive dropped it numerous times in the last 9 months and not a scratch or dent). I found its great for social networking and reading articles from links and the like. Browsing isnt too great, but that could be down to me and not being used to using a screen smaller than my monitor. Might want to take a look around GSMArena (or HowardForums) as well, as thats where most of the phone sales people get their knowledge from.

They don't seem to have that one. Unfortunately it has to come from Vodafone. No one else is going to give me a contract

The Nexus is £30 a month from Vodafone. I'm not going up to that much for the amount of use it will get. The Xperia mini has a 3" screen but you might be right about the resolution. The phone will probably be used for browsing quite a bit when i am at home to save me starting the computer up so a decent screen and resolution would be handy.

The only phone i've actually looked at in the shop was the Wildfire S. I liked the size at the time but i am concerned about the 3.2" screen being a little small for browsing. The problem is i simply don't know due to never having a screen over 1.5" and never using a phone for browsing.
AJ sheffield Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Do they not have the Galaxy Note, I'm ready for an upgrade right now and might go for the Note, it has a lovely display.
