thelittleone Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 Hello, I was wondering if anyone could give me advice about a good sewing machine which is under £150ish? I would like one with a foot pedal too. I am a complete beginner but eventually would like to make my own curtains! Thank you
renatka Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 hi I'm beginner too , and I bought my for £70 in lidl.
CraftCrazy Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Hello thelittleone. If you can stretch your budget a little (or have a look in the sales!) I have the Janome J3-24, it is great. It has a foot pedal like you want. I find the one step buttonhole is particularly useful. Also it can cope with thick fabric so it would be suitable for curtain making. Just be careful that the machine you buy will be able to cope with curtain fabric. I'd recommend plenty of shopping around and it's a good idea to find local sewing machine stockists, I know the little shop I went to get mine let me try loads of different machines and then gave me a lesson on using my machine when I finally chose one!

Thanks for this advice. This was one of the models I have been looking at actually so it's nice to hear some positives. Thanks for reassuring me it works on thicker fabrics also - this is something which the reviews didn't seem to mention. Hoping to get it this week!!
rwss Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 Hi, not sure if you have managed to buy your new machine yet, but I too would recomend Janome models - buy a good make and don't get wowed with lots of different stitches as you never use most of them. Try 'Woodseats Sewing Machines' shop as you can try lots of different models, get a warrentee with them (and they also have second hand reconditioned ones too). Also if you are interested Running With Scissors is running our 'Curtains for beginners' workshop again on March 24th - which would give you time to get used to your machine. All the inforamtion is on our website at http://www.rwssheffield.co.uk
