Mike Lydiat Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 Hello The Carolan Sessions have been running on the first Monday of the month since last February at the White Lion, London Rd (just past Ponsfords coming out of town). We need some more musicians. Can you help? Turlough O'Carolan was a blind Irish harper who lived from 1670-1738. He wrote over 200 tunes and we aim to play the lot!! You can see his full catalogue on my web site - www.docsworkshop.co.uk - if you like what you see then please come along to the next session: Monday Jan 2nd, 8.30 prompt. Or get in touch if you can come later in the year.
britishroame Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 Beautiful work .. x (platonic gesture) Spent quite some time on the water :-) and other places ... ;-) Archie ! http://www.youtube.com/britishroamer
Aisling Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 Hi Mike I'm moving to Sheffield in February for work and would love to join some music groups. I used to play in an Irish trad. group in Belfast about 10 years ago (I know it's been a while, sorry!). I used to be pretty decent at the tinwhistle and no problems sightreading as I'm currently in a choir, used play the flute in orchestras etc. Would rather play the whistle if I had to choose: you aren't short of whistlers are you? I'm sure I'll pick it up again - like riding a bike or something... How many are you at the moment? Cheers Aisling
Mike Lydiat Posted January 3, 2012 Author Posted January 3, 2012 Aisling - we'd love to see you at one of the sessions. Feb will be on the 6th so you might miss it (?). March will be the 5th. Whistles welcome - but bring your own dots (or memory!). You might also be interested in my session at Kelham Island Tavern (2nd and 4th Sunday lunch times)? Check my web site for details: http://www.docsworkshop.co.uk
Mike Lydiat Posted January 3, 2012 Author Posted January 3, 2012 Aisling - our regulars include me on guitars, a harpist and an Uilleann piper. We also get a few audience members. A select bunch but we enjoy the music.
Aisling Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 Feb 6th is my tentative start date for my new job if my current employers let me go early (currently have 8 weeks notice left to serve but if not see you in March!) Hmm memory probably not so great since it's been a while Have checked out the music on your website you used to put up a list of things that you planned to play each session. That way I could swot up beforehand ... or at least know which of the dots to bring with me Sure let us know nearer the time! See you soon Cheers Aisling
Aisling Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 Sounds great! Don't think I've ever seen an uilleann piper this side of the water - the last one was my primary school teacher
Mike Lydiat Posted January 3, 2012 Author Posted January 3, 2012 Take a look at the tune we played each month - some come up very frequently - that should give you a start. And maybe pick a new one of your own?? I do bring the O'Sullivan collection along, but we don't always stick to the keys there. All the dots are on my Carolan pages on Doc's Workshop.
Mike Lydiat Posted February 1, 2012 Author Posted February 1, 2012 The next meeting of The Carolan Sessions will take place on Monday Feb 6th, 8.30pm at the White Lion on London Rd. All welcome to listen or play.
