lee79 Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 We moved about 2 weeks ago from a provider that supplied us with about 1mb speed to BT Infinity that the speed check shows we have over 30mb of speed. The problem is despite the vast difference there does not seem to be any difference to me, in fact, I would say it is slower at times. So, what am I missing. Do I need to take a look at my laptop to see if it's anything to do with this? Thanks, Lee.
Assassin007 Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 Hi, Login to your router and check your downstream speed. If you have bt infinity, your speed should be notably faster. If the downstream speed is not as expected, contact BT. Regards, A
lee79 Posted December 29, 2011 Author Posted December 29, 2011 Hi Lee, did you check your speed using your Laptop? Could you please check the speed through: BROADBAND SPEED TEST You will be asked to put your Post Code in + Internet Provider and then click red button where it says BEGIN TEST... And let us know what's your speed with that... Just done this (thanks for the link) and it reads 12.8Mb. I was looking for an independant one as the BT one done last night was considerably more generous-will run that one again and see if there's still a difference. It also appears from the results that BT on average is the better provider in this area (S12).
lee79 Posted December 29, 2011 Author Posted December 29, 2011 Lee, I would suspect your laptop... as 12.8 MB is damn good speed for me ) That's what I'm thinking-bearing in mind my previous speed was really low and there being no noticable difference. The first day it was set up the laptop was pretty fast but since then returned to 'normal'. Do computer shops offer 'health checks' or similar and can recommend how to speed things up.
walkertelecoms Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Could be the wireless of your laptop if that's how you're connecting. You router should have come with a Cat5 cable (looks like a telephone socket on each end, but a slightly different shape) plug that into the back of the router and the other end into your lappy. There should be a button somewhere of the laptop that perhaps lights up BLUE with a picture of an aerial at the side of it, press that so the light goes off. Wait about 30 seconds then try a speedtest again.
